HOLYOKE – The owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team who is now serving as United States Ambassador to Ireland team will be marching in the St. Patrick’s Parade March 21.

The Parade committee Sunday announced Daniel M. Rooney, of Pittsburgh, is this year’s recipient of the John F. Kennedy Award.

Rooney, who was named Ambassador to Ireland by President Barack Obama in 2009, has been involved in the Irish peace process since the early 1970s and co-founded the American Ireland Fund. The fund, which is now known as the Worldwide Ireland Fund, had raised more than $300 million for peace and education programs for the country, said Raymond H. Feyre, chairman of the award selection committee.

The Kennedy Award is presented every year to an American of Irish descent who had distinguished in his or her profession. It is considered by some as the most prestigious honor of the parade. Some past recipients include Thomas J. Ridge, the first director of homeland security, actor Robert L. Stack and late Sen. Thomas P. O’Neil.
