LOL.. I've always though about this.. A sumo wrestler seems like the perfect guy to play on the O-line since they're experts at pushing people around and I've heard they're surprisingly quick for their weight.. I could see one playing guard
I read somewhere a while back that Al Davis flew out to Japan to look at one

I have long proposed making this our offensive line:
LT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akebono_Tar%C5%8D LG: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konishiki C: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towanoyama_Yoshimitsu RG: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamamotoyama_Ry%C5%ABta RT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyohibiki_Ry%C5%ABta Seriously, it's be like having five guys who were Refrigerator Perry, but 100 pounds heavier, and quicker. I don't know how they'd do at pass blocking, but in the running game, they'd get one hell of a push. Probably get called for holding all the time, though.

They would have to get out of the habit of reaching for the opponents crotch to move them.

Pondered it many times. Ideal NTs. Triple team blocking and still jail breaks. Wonder why it hasn't happened.
There was an Olympic heavy weight wrestler some decades back. I want to say his name was Taylor. Champ. Weighed 450. Quick as a cat. Somebody (cowfelons?) tried him out. No go.

Sumo wrestling is more than a sport in Japanese culture...they would probably see a career in the NFL as a demotion in their career.

I distinctly remember reading about someone who was active in the NFL taking some sort of sumo lessons, and sparring on the side. This was about ten years ago, and for some reason the Vikings ring a bell. I'm not sure of anything else about it, including even which side of the line the guy was on.
It was an anomaly at the time, which made it worth reporting, sort of kitschy, almost. Clearly it didn't set the world on fire, because now it's not even an anomaly. |

Sumo wrestlers would be a cool concept....
However.... 1. They're probably only good for 3-5 consecutive snaps before they're exhausted 2. They'd lose a ton of their mass in conditioning to make them last longer than said 3-5 snaps. 3. They become average after losing said weight. |

Out of current top 40 wrestlers there are 11 Mongolian wrestlers. Speaking of LT, Westbrook, & others, Asashoryu is up 4 grab. He just got "retired" from SUMO 4 good.
