Default Steelers close to putting franchise tag on Hampton

Steelers close to putting franchise tag on Hampton
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers are trying to work out a long-term deal to keep nose tackle Casey Hampton from becoming an unrestricted free agent, but they will use the franchise tag on the five-time Pro Bowl selection if they can't, the Post-Gazette has learned.

The Steelers have until Thursday to place the franchise tag on Hampton, a designation that would keep him with the team for at least one more season and guarantee him the average salary of the top five defensive linemen in the National Football League.

The Steelers could then attempt to sign the 10-year veteran to a long-term contract, much like they did last season when they named Max Starks their franchise player and eventually signed him to a four-year, $26.3 million contract that included a $10 million signing bonus.

And it appears they are prepared to do that if they can't reach an agreement before Thursday's deadline.

Hampton, who will be 33 in September, has indicated to the Steelers he does not want to have the franchise tag placed on him.

I hope we get something done with Hampton. It would put some pressure on the Steelers to replace him. I would also like to see Hampton retire as a Steeler.

I would tag him and try work out a deal over the next 5 months.

I would tag him....Then try to work out a deal for a couple more years....I know DT's can be effective until they're probably 38 or so (Pat Williams, etc), but those are not very common. I'm just afraid Casey is asking for a lot more than a 2 down player is worth...I wish I knew where the offers from each side stood.

They tagged him as negotiating strategy. This pretty much forces him to sign the final deal of his career or play one more year as a Steeler and give up hoping for a huge multi-year contract from another team. No team is going to pay a 34 year old NT a large signing bonus in 2011, if they even play.

It's not like he is being offered minimum wage. I know it's a business, but sometimes you have to adjust your lifestyle to live on $6 million per year. I know it's tough, but skip cheese on your Whopper in the offseason to save a few $.

Ill wait till Thursday to believe any rumors going on about Hampton. Soon we will know, but I just feel the smartest choice is to tag him up and then worry about a long term deal around 4 years to finish his career with the Steelers.

Hampton is just going to have to understand that he is not worth the big dollars anymore and at his age will need to accept a pay cut because no team would pay him what he is asking for.

I would like to know what they mean by long term deal....3 years....5 years...what. I really dont think I'd want some huge 5 year deal....3 years maybe....especially if they can draft his replacement this year, so he could work under Casey and learn and such and then be ready to step in. I dont want them to give some long contract with decent money then his play starts falling off/etc (like Farrior). If they tag him now...then they can see what happens in the draft and if they can land an eventual replacement...then work on a shorter deal (if any).

At $6 million a year Hampton can afford to put extra cheese on his Whopper, at least at my local BK he can. I can't understand why anybody would complain about making that kind of dough. Maybe he ought to give L T a call and see how it feels like to be released

3 years/ 21 million. $10 mil guaranteed (thats not too far off of the franchise value). the guarantee can be his base salary with 5.5. mil counting the next 2 years each, this way if we do need to cut him we do not have any dead money in amortized signing bonus. if we have to count him towards a future cap by keeping him, it is not much more than his cap value now.
