Hampton agent hopeful about a new deal
February 23rd, 2010

The Steelers may have no choice but to use the franchise tag on nose tackle Casey Hampton.

The good news for the Steelers: Hampton seems to have softened his stance toward the tag, which the five-time Pro Bowler said he didnít want used on him a little less than a month ago.

His agent, Brian Overstreet, said Tuesday that Hampton, an unrestricted free agent, is willing to sign a long-term deal with the Steelers even if they tag him ó the deadline for doing so is 4 p.m. Thursday ó and prevent him from hitting the open market.

Overstreet said the two sides have been working toward a new contract for Hampton.

"In negotiations all you can do is take people at their word and the Steelers committed to us that they want to get a deal done long term,Ē Overstreet said. ďAll we can hope is theyíre serious about it. Both sides are working real hard to get it done and hopefully it happens. He wants to be there and wants a long-term deal.Ē

If the two sides donít get a deal done before late Thursday afternoon, that doesnít mean time has run out on them.

A franchise tag is often used by teams to extend the negotiating period with one of their top free agents.

The Steelers took this route with Max Starks last year. If they try to do the same with Hampton, they would then have until the start of the 2010 season to get a deal done that would satisfy both sides.

Where Hampton took a hard line against the tag when he told the Tribune-Review in late January that ďitís going to be a problem if I get franchised,Ē Overstreet is more philosophical about it.

ďAs an agent and a player you hate that tag,Ē Overstreet said. ďAs a team owner itís one of the chips you can use in negotiations. Itís part of the (collective bargaining) agreement and itís just something that can happen. Thatís something thatís just a part of the business and hopefully it wonít come to that.Ē

Steelers close to putting franchise tag on Hampton
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10054/1037957-100.stm

The Steelers are trying to work out a long-term deal to keep nose tackle Casey Hampton from becoming an unrestricted free agent, but they will use the franchise tag on the five-time Pro Bowl selection if they can't, the Post-Gazette has learned.

The Steelers have until Thursday to place the franchise tag on Hampton, a designation that would keep him with the team for at least one more season and guarantee him the average salary of the top five defensive linemen in the National Football League.

The Steelers could then attempt to sign the 10-year veteran to a long-term contract, much like they did last season when they named Max Starks their franchise player and eventually signed him to a four-year, $26.3 million contract that included a $10 million signing bonus.

And it appears they are prepared to do that if they can't reach an agreement before Thursday's deadline.

Hampton, who will be 33 in September, has indicated to the Steelers he does not want to have the franchise tag placed on him.

I'd love to see them do a 4 year deal with Hampton and then they can tag somebody else if desired.

Heck, they can do a 5 year deal, but we know there is no such thing as a guaranteed contract in the NFL....so its gonna be all about the guaranteed money for Hamp.

what about a 3 yrs 23 mil contract with most of the guaranteed money being paid this year with the uncap year ? I know we want to run the thing like there is a cap but why not use it to our advantage, you pay the big man now,we draft a NT and then if he doesnt deliver the merchandise the next 2 years,we move on....

offer him 3 year 20 mil
if he turns it down
tag him and tell him some b.s. that if he wants a long term deal he better be in "free agent shape" come camp time than maybe sign him for 25
