Bulaga Bounces Back

Two of the draft's top offensive tackles, Oklahoma State's Russell Okung and Bryan Bulaga, stood at podiums on opposite ends of the media room at the same time. I had to choose which one I would observe and I decided to go with Bulaga.

Bulaga measured in this morning at 6-foot-5, 314 pounds. It's widely known that he suffered from a thyroid condition this past season, which hampered his play. And today he addressed the condition and how long it took for him to get back to normal.

"I had what is called Thyroiditis; it's a viral infection that lands in the thyroid," Bulaga said. "It causes your heart to overproduce that hormone, which increases the loss of stamina, fatigue, increased heart rate, loss of weight; all the above."

"There was a three week period; it hit me hard during Iowa State week, which was the first week I sat out with it. The effects of it lingered on into the season, and I wasn't able to workout or do anything for those three weeks. It took me a little while to get back into full game shape and it wasn't until Michigan State week until I felt like I was back to my old self."

Bulaga looked healthy and was in good spirits talking with the media this afternoon, and was confident in his response when asked where he thinks he stands among the top four tackles in this year's class.

"Personally, I think I'm the best tackle in the draft," he said. "Obviously, this is a very deep class; there's a lot of great players in it. Everybody is going to be jumping over each other, dropping underneath one another all the way up until draft day. It's going to be exciting to see (where I fall); this weekend is going to tell a lot. There's a lot of moving pieces to come in this entire thing."

Bulaga's stock went into a slight free fall when he was diagnosed. It remained low when he returned back to the field and he was pushed around by some of the DT's. Put that down to dropping a bit of weight and strength.

Once he regained full strength he showed why he is the #2 OT on the boards this year. He probably will go top 10 with a good showing this week. He will probably be the left tackle everyone thought Robert Gallery would originally be.

I'm still wrestling with the question if Bulaga can be an elite LT or not. He has solid technique, big frame, but not elite feet (IMO) from the several games that I saw him in. He might show better feet in some drills in the combine or not.

I think he is a bit of a reach in the top 10. He looks like a guy that might be a LT, but otherwise could be a pro bowl RT. This weekend may change my view.

I like Bulaga and would love if he or Iupati were there at 18. It would be a tough decision because we have needs also on Defense.

When the guy is healthy he is one of the very best in the draft in my opinion. I am starting to see why everyone was high on the OT from Maryland when you see him working out, but he is still very young and raw and not sure if he would be a wise choice at this point.
