Default Unemployed Americans may get their benefits after Senate and Bunning reach a deal

Senate reaches deal to end Bunning blockade

Updated 7:12 pm
By Ben Pershing
Senate leaders reached an agreement with Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) Tuesday to end his blockade of a bill extending unemployment benefits, highway funding and other federal programs.

The deal would allow a vote on the package Tuesday night, along with a vote on one Bunning amendment forcing the $10 billion bill to be offset with spending cuts elsewhere. Bunning will also get the chance to offer amendments on the next Senate jobs bill, a $150 billion measure slated for consideration by the Senate this week.

The unemployment benefits to more than 200,000 Americans and other federal programs expired Feb. 28, and an extension has been held up by Bunning's opposition.

After reaching the agreement, Bunning said, "I hope Senate Democrats tonight vote for their own pay-fors and show Americans that they are committed to fiscal discipline. I will be watching them closely and checking off the hypocrites one by one."

In addition, the Kentucky Republican has also placed holds on all pending Obama administration nominees, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) office confirmed Tuesday. Democrats assumed that Bunning would lift those holds after a deal was struck.

Bunning's office declined to comment on the holds.

That's very honorable of you Mr. Bunning, very honorable. Digging down deep to find that good ole' "fiscally responsible" grit. We wouldn't want to add to the budget deficit, no sir. We have to find a way to pay for legislation as it is passed. You know, through things such as Pay-go legislation, the same thing you voted against in January.

He wants to cut the budget deficit. He's also "very" concerned about the national debt. Hmmmm...........well, we could save about $13 billion a month just by leaving Iraq (you know, that country that "attacked" the United States 9 yrs ago), but he won't step up for that.

Naw, we can't do that. Being in Iraq is necessary (especially since they have so much oil over there.)

Outside of the "Ron Paul" Congressional conservatives, the rest of them are simply amazing. They don't want to raise taxes on those in the top 1-2%, they don't want to print new money (for risk of inflation), yet they have no problem borrowing it from the Chinese to finance the war in Iraq.

Let's cut spending on education, let's cut spending on Medicare and subsidies for Medicaid, but by all means, keep spending in Iraq. No matter the cost. Because letting the Iraqi people tend to their own country is simply unacceptable.

Thank you Mr. Bunning for showing us how "fiscally responsible" you are.

I wonder where Mr. Bunning was when Ron Paul was speaking out against all the GOP Congressional spending and didn't care how they paid for it.

Mr. Bunning, along with his GOP Congressional friends.....................fiscally responsible.................... (January 20, 2009- )

This reminds me of an old Lewis Grizzard tale about General Sherman leaving Atlanta in 1865. Went something like this…

Gen-rul Sherman had just finished burning down Et-lanna and was leading his army of 100,000 Yankee soldiers out I-20 when a lone Confederate soldier was spotted on top of Stone Mountain shouting all sorts of terrible things. The column came to a halt. “This will not do” said the Gen-rul. After all with CNN, CBS News and the whole media in tow, the world would see. Gen-rul Sherman sends his best soldier Schwartz up to take out the Confederate. After a while when Schwartz doesn't return the angered Gen-rul Sherman dispatches 10 of his crack Yankee troops to dislodge the lone Confederate. Not a single man returns. Gen-rul Sherman then sends 100 of his finest Yankee soldiers. After a noisy battle, one soldier returns, bloodied and battered. He approaches Gen-rul Sherman and says, “General Sherman, its a trick! They’s two of 'em!”
