It shouldn't matter about what comcast wants. Get your modem settings and print them out, then when setting up the new one put in the settings and you should be good. I have qwest and they want you to use their POS 2wire combo modems, that lasted for about a month before I upgraded on my own.

Get the Motorola SURFBoard. I've had Comcast since about 2002 or 2003 and I owned my modem the whole time. I had to replace it once simply due to it burning out after about 4-5 years. They were both plug and play too so I didn't have to bother calling Comcast.
