Default For Those Complaining About This Draft.

I have hear alot of complaints about who...when...why... we drafted certain players. I addressed this in the prospect break down.....but thought a centralized post might be needed.

It should be noted that we all talked about getting into that 3-4 round range in which we saw a great deal of talent. I think that our FO did a pretty good job of that, giving us 5 prospects who fell within NFL.com's final grade for their top 100 players.

OC Maurkice Pouncey #19
WR Emmanuel Sanders #50
OLB Jason Worilds #73
RB Jonathan Dwyer #89
OLB Thaddeus Gibson #95

Now for a breakdown of our draft picks....

1) Maurkice Pouncey - Very Safe Pick. I had him graded out as a late 1st early 2nd rounder. His value was elavated a little due to a pretty serious lack of talent at the position this year. Could we have got him a few picks later by trading down? Probably. Will he be an upgrade at the position and play at a high level for the next several years? Definately. He can play Guard and Center and is one of the few interior lineman in this years draft that has the sand in his pants to stand up to bull rushers.

2) Jason Worilds - I keep hearing that Worilds has one of the fastest first steps in this draft. If he can make the transition from DE to OLB he could be a terror on blitz packages. He had 29.5 tackles for losses over the past two years. Video shows that this guy hits ballcarriers like a truck. We have NO DEPTH worth mentioning behind our starting OLB's and needed at least two draft picks to shore up the position immediately and also to plan for the future.

3) Emmanuel Sanders - Sanders didnt get a lot of love yesterday, but as I pointed out, he had climbed the draft boards and was ranked above WR's like Arrelious Benn on NFL.com. Sanders showed progression every year in college and topped off his senior year with a 98 catch 1,339 yard performance. He has ran a 4.40 forty and video highlights shows a reciever with ELITE leaping ability. This time next year we will all be talking about his tendancy to out-jump defenders. Look for him to see alot of time at slot reciever.

4) Thaddeus Gibson - Another DE who the Steelers hope can make the transition to OLB. Gibson worked out for the Steelers coaches earlier this year and they obviously like what they saw in him. If you check his highlights, watch his backpedal. For a player that played college DE, he has a very smooth backpedal and lowers his hips like a CB when dropping into coverage. Some draft sites had him ranked above Worilds

5) Chris Scott - This was a surprise pick for me. I had thought that Scott projected as an mauling OG in the NFL, but Steelers.com has him listed as an OT. He has played every position on the line while in college so he has a little versatility to add to his value. Scott will have to keep his weight in check and build some stamina but when fresh he looks like he locks on and controls defenders . Give Scott a year in an NFL weight/strength program and he might be a steal.

5) Bryant McFadden - You have to add his value to this draft. Not only do we get a veteran CB...but one who already knows the playbook and the tendancies of our players in the backfield.

5) Crezdon Butler - Strickly a project player in the mold of Ike Taylor, good Size/Speed ratio but will need to be coached-up in regards to reading offenses and improving his tackling technique. I wasnt crazy about this pick at all...but I understand the "project" mentality.

5) Stevenson Sylvester - Player who will probably make his mark on special teams initially but may have the range, closing speed and instincts to play both ILB/OLB if he can become more of a wrap up tackler. We really dont need an ILB this year with Foote and Fox both being very good bakups, but if this is Farriors last year, I think Sylvester will eventually become the #4 ILB. He might spend this year on the PS or ST's

6) Jonathan Dwyer -One of the biggest steals of the draft, NFL.com ranked him as the #89 best player and thought he might be gone in the 2nd round. A slow forty time initiated his slide, but Dwyer is a thick bodied, tackle-breaking power back who shows great forward lean and has a very good stiff arm. He is built to run over you...not around you.

6) Antonio Brown - I have heard alot of complaints about us drafting ANOTHER reciever. Well......Brown had 3,434 yards and five touchdowns returning kicks and punts over the past three years. I think its obvious why we drafted him. It also doesnt hurt that he runs a 4.42 forty and he had 1,198 yards and 9 TD's last year as a reciever, which makes him more versatile and valuable than Logan as a return specialist.

7) Doug Worthington - Linebackers coach, Keith Butler, was at Worthingtons Pro-day workout and was obviously impressed by the DE's athleticism. Ohio State never really allowed Worthington the time at any one position to stand out and they played him all over the D-line...even as a NT. He is a try-hard player that might light a fire under Sonny Harris, who could be on the outside looking in if Worthington makes the squad.

That is my take on the prospects...last night I watched them on video and tried to get a feel for where they fit on our team. My humble opinion is that our FO did pretty well.

You not alone LLT. I was pretty pleased with the way the draft went, and was a little surprise at some of the comments I have been hearing.

i was a bit shocked we didnt take a ILB, but hearing Sylvester might be able to slide inside is a good thing. I was a litle shocked at our draft after 1st rd pick, but i trust the FO. I do like the get time on ST while learning your position. That means alot of guys who are ST only wil be gone unless they can prove worthy at their position.

After I got through the initial knee-jerk reaction and actually looked at the picks I think they did a pretty good job. The only pick I didn't really like was the Sylvester pick. Would have rather seen a safety there. Myron Rolle, Cody Grimm, Kurt Coleman: all those safeties were still available when we picked up Sylvester.

But now our backup linebackers aren't Patrick Bailey and Timmons. And we have good special teamers.

Sanders, IMO, was one of their best picks. He really reminds me of Steve Smith. Not the biggest buy, but superior athletic ability. Many people have been complaining that we didn't take Tate, and even though I hadn't heard of Emmanuel before, I think he has far more upside due to his superior physical tools. His immediate impact in the return game means we can probably drop Logan so he can no longer waste a roster spot.

I think the draft indicates our desire to rush the passer.

Well....last years draft i had complaints about the O line we took 2 corners instead, there was all this talk about passing team now blah, blah and it took the owner of the Steelers to say we need better line play and run the ball more for people to start talking about Olineman in this draft.... i may not be an NFL gm but that doesn't mean i have to swallow and co-sign everything they put out either i believe that's my right as a fan and an American....i still think we could have addressed DB early and still gotten these same LB's, and at least one of the wideouts Even though we picked up Mcfadden, because as we saw before the Steelers aren't going to pay him when his contract expires, anD he's making more now than when he left the first time.......i don't like this draft

The McFadden pickup allows us to develop Keenan Lewis....and eliminated the need for a DB. I will have to check to make sure, but I am pretty confident that Hartwig has allowed more sacks then anyone else on our front line over the past two years...so Pouncy would be the FO answer to that.

Noone is asking you to sign off on anything....We would just like for everyone to look at the draft in light of the FA acquisitions and the talent level that this draft brought to the team.

This was a draft for the future...and I can see 7 "potential" future starters (counting Brown as a RS)

gil brandt had pouncy ranked top 20. worilds top 60. gibson top 80. kirwan had all three going in the top 3 rounds in his final mock.

the best thing that has happened with this draft, our few FA aquisitions, and the ex-steelers we brought back is it CREATES COMPETITION across the board. we have not had that in steelers camp in years (especially after the 2 SB championships). the rosters were pretty much set. the veterans rested on their laurels and the young guys and rookies already knew they didnt have a shot to win a spot due to past success and tenure.

this was especially true during cowhers tenure. theres a reason almost all of our back up O-Linemen always seemed to suck and never develop. they never had a shot to compete with smith, faneca, hartings, simmons, etc. okobi, essex, kemo, almost rotted on the bench. we dumped many more. when starks actually faced an open competition from colon at RT he actually lost his job. that was the first time that happened in years.

everybody is on notice this year, starting with santonio and ben. everybody should be looking over their shoulder (including the coaches) with exception of lebeau, troy, hampton, and miller. james and woodley are fine, but we finally got them some quality back-ups incase we face the same dreaded situation as last year when 2 defensive stalwarts were lost for the season.

i heard a veteran redskin interview a few weeks ago, and he was asked the best and most impressive thing about mike shanahan. he said there was finally competition across the board and what a great thing that was. i imagine all players feel like this. i immediately realized that was a big problem with the steelers where the majority of players are so solidified in their jobs, things become stale.

it is getting better with tomlin and this years draft is proof.

Just my thoughts on the BMac contract/not paying him/etc comment. We did make offers to him before...but we could only offer soo much...with other players needing re-signed and the cap in place...HE chose to go where the money was...and he thought he could fit into their system. Well he didnt fit to well into theirs...even though they are "Steelers West"...and the Cards have some other young guys and were willing to give up BMac...and made it possible for them to get a good young QB prospect in the process. As part of the BMac deal...they wanted to have a contract extension in place or they wouldnt do the deal...they signed him to a 3 year extension...so he's already resigned. If it was an uncapped year when he left...we could have easily signed him up to a front loaded contract (as we've done with all of our FA signings this year) and kept him around. Now that he's re-signed and has seen the grass isnt always greener on the other side...i think he's here to stay...if they want to offer him a new deal 4 years from now...who knows what the situation will be then...but he's not going anywhere anytime soon again!
