Default Re: What About Edge?

I really don't think we can afford him.

Although I don't think we are in as much cap trouble as most would think

Right now I believe we are 4 mil over the cap.

8 mil of that is tied up in Hartings and I think he will restructure his deal to retire here in the burgh and go for another ring.

I think we will see some restucture on a few of the guys this year. We should be fine.
But I still think edge will cost way to much.

If we cold somehow trade up quite a few places in the draft, I would love to see us get LenDale White, I think him and Willie would be a great 1 - 2 punch for years to come. I also think they would both be willing to take these roles. White could have transferred in college instead of share the light with Reggie Bush. We know Willie is just happy to be in the NFL (despite the fact that he is SEVERELY underrated).

Any thoughts on this?
I agree.....Parker's got a year under his belt he'll be even better next year.....Deuce? I don't know whats up with him he needs to get better conditioned and get his knees stronger.....even if we don't trade up there will still be a few backs left we can grab that'll fit into our smashmouth running.....Big thing now is whats going to happen with the collective bargaining agreement....we'll just have to wait and see

My understanding is that big ticket signings for all teams are being tied up with the uncertainty over the collective bargaining agreement and consequent problems in amortizing signing bonuses for long periods of time.
yeah he has 2 years left. i think any big free agent signing would just put us in a horrible situation when players like troys and bens, and even willies contracts expire. there is a very smart reason the steelers didnt persue ty law last year even though many believed he would be an integral cog to winning a sb. also a good reason we didnt keep plexico or k. bell. not that they sucked, they were simply too expensive.

i guess with this labor agreement deal not getting done we could be on the verge of dan snyder amassing an 80's 49er style of team after next year.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. He would be a good fit there, but I don't see it happening.

Need a Steeler type back. Duce is it if he can stay healthy. I know you guys will think I'm nuts, but Stephen Davis would fit the mold for a year or two or three (again, health would be an issue). He's a tough runner.., Like Jamal Lewis w/o the criminal history.
My bet though will be Duce at 100%, Fast Willie and hopefully we can retain Verron.

I think it's much better to get lineman and go cheap on the running backs.

Maybe get Quincy Wilson off Cincy's practice squad. And Parker could improve as he hasn't had much experience. Anyway if Staley's healthy he can go almost as well as Alexander or Edge. Also our third down back is pretty good. I really like Stephen Davis too if he is cheap.

Parker though is seriously underrated and still could improve a lot. He could learn to spin out of tackles, when to just dive forward, etc. But you can't teach that kind of speed. He might be the fastest running back in the league.

There's plenty of other guys out there though that can get it done behind a good line. Look at the Packers with Samkon Gado. He barely got on the field in college either. There's lots of guys out there at running back who would play really cheap. Spend the money on lineman/defense.

Edge? Nah. As things stand now, if the Colts and Squaks can't pony up enough money to keep their backs, I'm struggling to think who else in the league will. The contracts these guys want will be too big for road worn backs who aren't getting any younger.

I think we try and squeeze a decent year out of Duce as a situational back and let Willie play.

Man, I was watching the Steeler History DVD. As most you have it know, there is a segment on Jerome Bettis from the beginning of his career up until last year. Man, there are clips on there where he just murders guys that try and tackle him, its almost comedy like how pro football players look like dummy bags when getting in his way. I just dont see anyone in the league right now that can give us that. Hell, a 33 year old bettis was still running over the Urlachers of the world this year and getting 100 yards on the DPOY and the #1 defense. I think the only guy I have seen who is big, has good feet, is lendale White. Anyone else, I just dont see. And guys like Edge and Alexander are going to want big money.
