Default Pouncey impressive in first outing

Steelers 1st Rounder Marukice Pouncey begins his push for a starting spot on OL
By Dagger, on August 16th, 2010
It’s only one game and he’s going up against 2nd stringers but if Pouncey continues to play this way, I start him the final 2 preseason games. If he proves he can hang, I name him my starting Center. Move Hartwig to RG or let Foster/Essex battle for the position.

As you watch the brief clip below, take notice of how well Pouncey moves, how he gets to the 2nd level, the way he finishes plays and hustles, the push he gets against the DL in shortyardage, his ability to “hand defenders off” when in pass protection. Good stuff.

Steelers rookie Maurkice Pouncey is practicing at center with the first team this afternoon.

Pouncey and Justin Hartwig, the starting center the past two seasons, have been splitting the center position with the first and second teams this afternoon, It is the first time Pouncey has practiced with the first team since the Steelers drafted him in the first round in April.

The Steelers have not had a rookie regularly start since Heath Miller in 2005.

good. fartwig is the worst center in the league. didn't he allow the most sacks out of all centers for 2 years in a row? not only won that honor also but blew everybody else out, and that ain't a good stat to lead the nfl in

The Steelers could play Hartwig at R guard if he is good enough (prob not) and still have him call the plays.

I think if Essex has been doing OK with R guard, playing Pouncey at center might be good.

Big mistake to try to move Hartwig to guard. He's not an inside guy. I'd rather see what he can do back at tackle where he played in college.

Nice to see our #1 actually get in there early and hopefully, we'll see a big improvement in the middle of our line. One thing that has always frustrated me is that the coaching staff has played these guys in so many positions ... the players never quite become experts in the position they are expected to start during the season.

i think Pouncey will be our starting center come week 1. he is way better then hartwig. hartwig isnt good enough to win any spot on the line and will be nothing more then a backup
