Default the truth about J. Dwyer (and I. Redman last year)

theres lots of talk about why redman didnt make the cut last year. as the #4 or #5 guy on the depth chart, he simply couldnt seperate himself on special teams.

he was one dimensional.

the same thing seems to be plaguing dwyer this year. he looks pretty good with the ball in his hands.

other than that, what has he done?

steelersdepot broke it down excellently. unfortunately the youtube video of 8 plays with dwyer whiffing on blocks and standing around with his thumb up his ass has bee removed, but read this great write up and analysis.-

on the flipside is gary russell. in addition to scoring a TD in SB 43 he had 9 special team tackles on the steelers playoff run, including 3 in the superbowl.

yep...tomlin has said on many occasions that he expects backups to be able to play special teams .. and we all know how he feels about players showing up in substandard condition.

Well somebody needs to play special teams. Nobody did last year!

absolutely. A backup may get to play in a game or 2 if the starter was injured, but the real value is can they contribute on special teams. If they can't, why hold a roster spot for a guy who likely won't play much or will cost you a big return on special teams.
