Default 3rd Down Analysis

Hot off the press...

I went through the play by play to look at every 3rd down to see what happened.

We were 4/14 on 3rd down with 29% efficiency.

11 pass plays were called and we were successful on 2 of them (2/11).

3 run plays were called and we were successful on 2 of them (2/3).

Of note: On many of the third down pass plays that were unsuccessful, the pass was complete...just short of making the first down. On occasion Dixon was sacked or had a broken pass play where he ran...which would not show up as a pass attempt but is a pass play called.

We must do better with our 3rd down passing. We must hit receivers beyond the sticks so we don't have completed passes that fail to get the first down.

As a small tangent, I decided to look at 1st down.

8 passes
17 runs

Of note: Dixon was quite amazing on first down. I think he was like 7/8 and some were for decent gains. maybe he feels less pressure and does better on first down...or maybe the defense was surprised because we kept running on first down so they were not prepared.

I hope they can move to 50/50 on first down if Dixon continues to pass well on first down.

They were choking in the Red Zone last year. Ben had a great passing game against their 31st rank defense but they held us to 37 yards on the ground.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 33 of 43 passes for 363 yards in that game... Red Zone woes.

Thanks. That was fun to read. I mentioned in another thread that Dixon was having trouble with the 3 man rush and more people covering.

That accuracy assumption is a leap...we'll see. He says don't expect a QB to be inaccurat 2 weeks in a row huh? Some QB are just inaccurate and they can be that way 20 games in a row...or 100. Dixon did improve as the game went on so we'll just have to wait and see.
