If I showed you two lines:
10-15 7.5 games out of first
8-15 7.0 games out of first
on May 1st would you ever had believed the first is the Yankees, and the second is the Bucs? So much for spending all that extra money. Goes to show, you may need more than 30 million to be competitive, but at least you don't need over 200 million.

5/01/05 8-3 loss to the Giants
Pirates are 8-15 (7.0 back of the Cards)

5/03/05 7-4 win over the Astros
Pirates are 9-16 (8.0 back of the Cards)(3.0 back of 2nd though, damn Cards)

While we we are chatting about value...
Yankees are 11-16 after the day with Tampa Bay, total salaries = $208,306,817
Pirates are 9-16 after win against Houston, total salaries = $38,133,000

Since we might not be in the race for much longer I've decide on a different chase...

Yankees $/win = 18,936,983
Pirates $/win = 4,237,000

4x's as much??? I'm telling you Pirates fans, now that we have no big contracts except Lawton who could be gone by years end if he keeps producing, we are doing well and Pirates should be proud they have not gotten into Penguin trouble by going out too early and buying players it couldn't afford. But hopefully if you keep supporting the team we can soon see the days of a 45-55 million payroll like the Reds or Brewers and see some bigger talent come to town. No disrespect to our current players, but we have 12 years of losing. Enough is enough. We have the foundation in place.

5/04/05 6-4 win over the Astros(we own them!)
Pirates are 10-16 (8.0 back of the Cards)(.5 game out of last!)

To highlight some questions, can our starters recover like our hitting is starting to do? They are pitching decent, but can't be counted on to deliver innings or more important leads and wins. Also on the positive, the Bucs have now won 6 of last 11. Too bad there was that 4 game losing streak in that mix! Lets go Bucs!

5/05/05 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks(3 in a row, 7 0f 12)
Pirates are 11-16 (7.0 back of the Cards)(3.0 games out of 2nd)
Bay and Castillo are on being the few over.300 right now. Mesa won the saves award or delivery award for April. On the other end, J. Wilson and Wiggington are now at least north of .150. Good play on this road trip then coming back to a fired up home town could make this a good month.

whats up with Perez? He's getting drilled again tonight. Thought it was stupid for McClatchy and Littlefield to piss off Perez and BAy by not redoing their contracts, but man maybe we are okay.
