Legursky, Batch great stories

Nobody asked me, but . . .

* Charlie Batch is the best individual feel-good story of the Steelers season, but not far behind is Doug Legursky, the undrafted free agent from Marshall who will start at right guard Sunday for the second straight game.

* That was another mail-in managerial performance by John Russell last night. He watched Zach Duke, who has no future with the Pirates, allow five runs in the first three innings against Florida but still sent him out to pitch the fourth. At which point, a 5-2 game became a 9-2 game. The Pirates lost, 11-9. Who says managers don't make a difference? But when you've lost 102, what's one more?

* Mike Wallace has stepped up superbly to replace Santonio Holmes as the Steelers deep-threat wide receiver. Now if someone would step up in a similar manner and replace Wallace as the team's No. 3 receiver.

* One word of caution about the verbal commitment Pitt got this week from blue-chip power forward Khem Birch. He can't officially sign with Pitt until November and from we hear some teams are still recruiting him hard. Make that real hard.

* Think back to Jack Wilson's nearly decade-long run as the Pirates' shortstop and the dozens of memorable fielding plays he made. Now try to think of one that Ronny Cedeno has made.

* Freddy Sanchez has been a large part of the San Francisco Giants' drive for a West Division title. He's batting .341 (58-170) in August and September. It's all enough to make someone say he can flat-out hit.

* Here's something the Pirates need almost as much as a couple of capable starting pitcher: A vice-president of public relations, and I mean someone with some clout within the organization. The Pirates desperately need someone who can help steer this clueless management team on a better path of presenting the news and keeping their proverbial foot out of their respective mouths.

* Pitt football needs to win big and quarterback Tino Sunseri needs to gain some confidence Saturday against Florida International, which is not a bad club. With a disappointing Notre Dame team on the schedule a week later, Pitt has a chance to get on a roll.

* The incredible 2010 season of former Pirates Jose Bautista reached new heights last night when he hit two more home runs -- numbers 53 and 54. Remember how people, myself included, were suggesting Bautista would cool off in the second half of the season? Since the All-Star Game, he has Bondsian/Ruthian numbers: A .723 slugging percentage and a 1.128 OPS.

* Rashard Mendenhall is fourth in the NFL in rushing. Don't hear much about the absence of a fullback these days.

* I have no problem with the Pirates firing a minor-league manager if he was not doing the job they wanted done and I don't care how many titles he won. The first function of a minor-league manager is to develop players, not win titles.
