Columbus was limp & lifeless against Buffalo last evening ~ might-as-well kick 'em while they're down

Yeah, I just looked...I didn't realize they've lost 4 in a row. It could go either way I'm thinking. They might continue on their losing streak...but they might just use this game to jumpstart their game again. Hoping for the former of course lol.

I forgot to mention that both Malkin (undisclosed injury) and Orpik (illness) both left practice Friday as well, but were both on the ice skating today.

despite averaging 2.2 goals-per-game, NJD have scored twice in the first 14 minutes against the Phailures, and lead 2-1 in Rendellphia this afternoon:
it gives me a warm & fuzzy feeling

Jersey had a nice start to the game...but then they went back into suck mode.

Would have been nice to have (maybe) a 4 point lead in the division after today...but I'll settle for a 2 point lead or maybe even at this point. Just hope the Craps lose.

Update from the Pens site...Malkin will not be playing tonight.

PittsburghPenguins.com has learned that forward Evgeni Malkin will not be in the lineup for the Penguins tonight in Columbus. Malkin suffered an undisclosed injury during the team's Thursday win over Atlanta

In other news...what's up with Sid's swanky porn stache? He scores more with the dirt under his nose, so I say keep it!

*Edit* Nevermind...I think I just found out. Apparently, it's part of "Movember" and men grow moustaches to raise awareness for prostate cancer. Maybe Sid just doesn't feel like shaving his off lol.

Pens won BIG tonight! 7-2 over the Jackets. Scoring came from: Martin (2), Rupp, Crosby (2), Kennedy and Engelland.

Was an incredibly fun game to watch as well...Pens/Jackets games in Columbus are always fun to watch. The arena was at least half Pens fans...and I swear it's louder there than at home games. It was hilarious, after Mason let 3 goals by, you could hear the crowd heckling him pretty loud...and when Fleury would make big saves, you could here the fans chanting his name. They were even doing the wave towards the end of the game lol. I wish we played there more often.

Caps lost tonight as well and the Pens are officially tied for fist place, not only in the conference, but in the league. Here's hoping this hot streak keeps going!

I agree, most boisterous crowd I've heard this season

Red-hot Penguins crush Columbus
By Rob Rossi, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, December 5, 2010
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt...rce=rss&feed=8

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nearly four full minutes remained in the opening period Saturday night when a young man wearing a black Tyler Kennedy Penguins sweater looked at his friends in the very last row of the upper deck at Nationwide Arena and barked these instructions: Pack up the truck, this game is over!

Actually, he was late on that call by a couple of minutes.

Starting with four first-period goals on 16 shots, the Penguins won a ninth straight game, 7-2, over the Columbus Blue Jackets — a victory coach Dan Bylsma described as "not quite enjoyable until it's over."

Also apparently over: The honeymoon between Columbus fans and their one-playoff-appearance hockey club.

Only the third home sellout of this 10th anniversary season for the Blue Jackets, their fourth regulation loss in five games was a full-on party for thousands of Penguins fans who made an arena that Consol Energy Center was partly modeled after feel like home.

"I'd say having a goalie chant for the opposing team is odd," Penguins forward Mike Rupp said. "That doesn't surprise me with these (Penguins) fans, though. They surrounded our hotel, and they were all over this city."

Their team was all over the Blue Jackets, who won the hits battle, 23-11, but were otherwise outclassed.

Eleven players registered a point for the Penguins, seven in the first period.

About the first 15 minutes and 49 seconds: Defenseman Paul Martin scored two unassisted goals on power plays; Ohio's own Rupp crashed the crease to stuff home a loose-puck rebound from a shot by fellow fourth-line forward and enforcer Eric Godard; and, of course, center Sidney Crosby tallied to extend a 15-game point streak (17 goals, 31 points).

Blue Jackets starter Steve Mason allowed four goals on 13 shots and was pulled after Crosby's tally.

"We didn't fall apart after that (first) one," Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. "We fell apart after all three of the ugly goals."

At the end of 20 minutes, the Blue Jackets had managed to test goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with all of two shots — one fewer than Rupp's total.

All due respect to Rupp, a fine contributor in his second season with the Penguins; but him outshooting an opponent over a period can't have happened often.

"Never that I know of," he said.

No player in NHL history has recorded a point while sitting out because of injury, either. Not that anybody would have been surprised had center Evgeni Malkin (left knee) managed to pull that off given the way this first period went for the Penguins.

Coach Dan Bylsma said Malkin's knee is not structurally damaged.

"He's just been banged up," he said.

The Blue Jackets were battered, their egos bruised, by the end of two periods. Goals went to Kennedy, Crosby (his 23rd) and defenseman Deryk Engelland — the Penguins enforcer from the blue line who provided them with a third unassisted goal from defensemen.

Fleury stopped 21 shots for his 10th win in 11 starts since falling to 1-6-0. He allowed goals to center Samuel Pahlsson and right wing Chris Clark.

The Penguins (18-8-2, 38 points) are on an 11-0-1 roll. Over that span, they are plus-22 in goal differential, 10 for 40 on the power play and 42 of 45 on the penalty kill.

Their upcoming games are against New Jersey, Toronto and Buffalo — teams that began yesterday at a combined 26-41-9 — before a mid-month Atlantic Division showdown with the Flyers at Philadelphia.

That stretch is the future.

In the present, the Penguins are where they expected to be despite a slow start: atop the Atlantic Division.

Billy Guerin to Retire "As a Pittsburgh Penguin"
Monday, 12.06.2010 / 9:11 AM / News
http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.ht...id=DL|PIT|home

Billy Guerin today announced his retirement as an NHL player – and, symbolically, he is retiring as a Pittsburgh Penguin.

Guerin, 40, played 18 NHL seasons for eight teams, recording 429 goals and 427 assists for 856 points and winning two Stanley Cups.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound right winger played 95 games with the Penguins over the final two seasons of his career and was an essential part of the team’s 2009 Stanley Cup championship after being acquired at the March trading deadline.

“We were only here a short time but my family and I developed such a deep connection to the city, the team and the fans,” Guerin said. “It was amazing. From ownership and Ray Shero to the coaching staff and trainers, from my teammates to the arena workers to the people in the stands, they all treated us in such a first-class manner. It was an extremely positive experience. We all agree that retiring as a Pittsburgh Penguin is the perfect thing to do.”

Guerin also played for the New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders in a career that spanned from 1991-92 through 2009-10. He broke in with the Devils and won a Stanley Cup there in 1995.

During the 2009 Cup playoff run, Guerin played right wing with Sidney Crosby and delivered seven goals and 15 points in 24 games, including an overtime game-winner against the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2009-10, his final NHL regular season, he had 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points in 79 games for the Penguins.

A native of Wilbraham, MA, Guerin also represented the U.S. in the Olympics in 1998, 2002 and 2006 and played in two World Cups.
