Great game against the Isles tonight...Johnson posted another shutout, though I don't think it will count as an official shutout b/c him and DiPietro got tossed with like :15 left for fighting. Johnson knocked his block off. I've never actually seen a goalie fight live, so that was awesome.

The whole team on the bench was cracking up...Fleury (who has to finish) absolutely loved it.

Pens are back within a point of the Flyers again.

No Geno tonight...but he should be back real soon. Nothing official on Letestu yet.

*Edit* They just said this was the first goalie fight in four years. The last one was Emery vs. Biron in the classic Ottawa/Buffalo line brawl. Will post video soon.

We were joking at home that DP would be put on IR with a bruised ego after the fight with Johnny.

We were close I guess lol. Guy just can't stay healthy AT ALL.

Isles' goalie DiPietro to miss 4-6 weeks
Friday, 02.04.2011 / 1:10 PM / News
NHL.com
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=551632

Rick DiPietro is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to facial fractures suffered in a fight Wednesday and knee swelling, the latest misfortune to befall the oft-injured New York Islanders goaltender.

DiPietro, who played just 13 games over the previous two seasons due to persistent knee injuries, is 7-10-4 in 21 games this season with a 3.36 goals-against average and .890 save percentage for the Isles, who have fallen into last place in the Eastern Conference.

"At this point it's like whatever bad could happen just seems to happen," DiPietro said. "Not just myself, but the entire team. Not just like small groin pulls and muscle strains where you're out a couple days -- it's blown-up hips and knees and faces."

DiPietro joins a long list of injuries for the Islanders that includes fellow goalie Nathan Lawson (knee), defensemen Mark Streit (shoulder) Mike Mottau (hip), Mark Eaton (hip) and Milan Jurcina (upper body) and forwards Doug Weight (back) and Trent Hunter (MCL). Forward Kyle Okposo also missed the first half of the season due to a preseason shoulder injury.

In the closing seconds of a 3-0 loss in Pittsburgh, DiPietro got into a fight with Penguins goalie Brent Johnson, who quickly connected with a punch to DiPietro's face, dropping him to the ice.

"I'm sick of losing, our team's sick of losing," DiPietro said. "You never go into a fight expecting that you're going to get smashed in the face that hard or with these kinds of consequences, but it happens. He landed a good punch and you move on."

DiPietro showed a wry sense of humor in describing the brief, yet damaging altercation.

"I didn't realize, obviously at the time, that his arms were so long or that he could throw such a hard left punch, but I found both of those out pretty quickly," he said.

Pens are playing a great game right now against the Sabres. 1st half sucked, Buff. went up 2-0 early...but the second half Pens went up 3-2. It was pretty chippy in the 2nd as well. I expect a fight or two here in the 3rd!

am watching the Lightning host the Crapitals, and heard a report that RENEGADE was played at Consol during a TV time-out, bringing the fans to their feet waving Terrible Towels:
the poor Sabres probably didn't know W-d-F was going-on...

Malkin injured in return to lineup
Friday, 02.04.2011 / 9:12 PM / News NHL.com
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=551698

Evgeni Malkin's return to the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup didn't last long.

Malkin left Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres with what appeared to be a right leg injury after a second-period collision with Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers.

Malkin got tied up racing for a loose puck in the corner with Myers in the first few seconds of the period. Myers, a 6-foot-8 defenseman, appeared to fall on Malkin's right leg, which crumpled underneath him. Malkin remained on the ice for some time, then skated off to the dressing room with some assistance.

According to the Penguins' official Twitter feed, Malkin suffered what the team is calling a lower-body injury and will not return.

Malkin returned to the lineup Friday after missing five games with a left knee injury and a sinus infection. The 24-year old has 15 goals and 27 assists in 43 games this season.

The Penguins were playing their 12th game without captain Sidney Crosby, who's out with a concussion. They are also without rookie centre Mark Letestu, who was hurt in the morning skate on Tuesday and is expected to miss up to six weeks with a knee injury.

Well, Pens lost today too...but I wasn't too surprised. Caps are a decent team, and being without Crosby, Malkin and Letestu really hurts. Not to mention the fact it was an early afternoon game on NBC. Those never bode well.

I don't care what anyone says though. I love Matt Cooke. He's a douchebag, but he's our douchebag. And him taking a run at Ovechkin, well, let's just say...it couldn't have happened to a better guy. Boudreau is a dipshit though who acts like he's got no clue how things really work in the NHL. Yes, Bruce...Steckel took a headshot on Crosby, that means he and Ovi are targets now. Deal with it.

Cooke's collision causes chaos in Penguins' loss
By Josh Yohe, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, February 7, 2011

WASHINGTON — Leave it to a reasonably dull 3-0 Penguins loss to the Washington Capitals on Sunday to fuel hockey's hottest rivalry.

Despite his team soundly defeating the shorthanded Penguins, who are without star centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau unleashed a postgame tirade aimed at Penguins forward Matt Cooke.

Boudreau took issue with a collision between Cooke and Capitals' star Alex Ovechkin with 3:42 left in a game that was preceded by talk of possible retaliation for a Capitals hit against Crosby during the Winter Classic on Jan. 1.

"It's Matt Cooke," Boudreau said. "Need we say more?"

Boudreau said much more.

"It's not like it's his first rodeo," he said. "He's done it to everybody and then he goes to the ref and says, 'What did I do?' He knows (darn) well what he did. There's no doubt in my mind."

Boudreau made it clear he believes Cooke, who was penalized, tried to injure Ovechkin.

"He's good at it," Boudreau said. "He knows how to pick this stuff. We, as a league, we still buy into this, 'Oh, it was accidental thing.' "

Boudreau coached Cooke for a part of the 2007-08 season. Cooke, who met with reporters about 20 minutes before Boudreau's comments, seemed puzzled by the commotion his collision caused. Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom both landed punches on Cooke's face following the hit, though neither was penalized.

"I just tracked the puck," Cooke said. "He cut back on me. We clicked skates."

Boudreau wasn't irritated only by Cooke's hit but with the Penguins in general. In the third period, forward Tim Wallace, who was recalled Saturday from Wilkes-Barre, challenged Capitals left wing David Steckel to a fight and defeated him cleanly.

Steckel threw a blindside hit on Sidney Crosby during the Winter Classic, a blow some believe has caused Crosby's current concussion issues. Boudreau was incensed that the Penguins challenged the 6-foot-5, 217-pound Steckel to a fight.

"If anybody wants to build up this whole Crosby thing," Boudreau said, "I mean, he didn't hit him intentionally. I've coached him for eight years now, and he's never done it once. If they want to use that as a motivating tool, go ahead."

Regarding Wallace picking a fight with Steckel, Boudreau continued, "They send out a guy they call up and Mike Rupp, who's a fighter (and) knows Dave never fought, challenging him. It was crap."

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma didn't seem bothered by anything Cooke did.

Ovechkin drew the Penguins' ire two years ago in the playoffs when his knee-on-knee hit injured Sergei Gonchar.

"I didn't think much contact was made (by Cooke)," Bylsma said.

The Penguins didn't make much contact with the back of Washington's net. Crosby and Malkin, who is likely out for the season with a knee injury, were missed badly, as the Penguins rarely generated any offense.

"Make no mistake about it," defenseman Zbynek Michalek said. "They're our two best players. We miss them. But we've shown we can play well without them. (Sunday) wasn't our best game."

Brooks Laich scored on a rebound late in the first period to put the Capitals ahead, Marcus Johansson scored a shorthanded goal early in the second, and Mike Knuble put the game away with an empty-netter. Michal Neuvirth stopped all 22 shots he faced.

The teams meet again Feb. 21 in Pittsburgh.

"They don't like us," Boudreau said. "We don't like them."
