Default Redskins Bust Bank Again - Sign S Archuleta

I guess Danny Snyder did not hear that there still will be a salary cap.

Today's break the bank signing is Rams FA safety Adam Archuleta. Deal includes a $10 million signing bonus and is valued at around $30 million over 6 years, the same neighborhood as yesterday's ARE deal.

Leaving aside the question of how Snyder does this under the cap (I guess paying off the Arrington contract helped), this raises the bar significantly for what Chris Hope can claim a market rate safety should be paid and puts the number for re-signing Troy (who I believe has a 5 year contract, meaning he needs to get re-signed in early 2007 going into the last year of his contract in 2007) in the stratosphere.

FYI - Archuleta did not make the Pro Bowl but got this contract.

I agree, this is going to hurt us with Hope and crush us with Troy.

i think when teams negotiate they will throw out any snyder numbers as being greatly inflated. i dont think agents will have to much leverage when saying a player washington signs sets the bar or market. i believe brandon lloyd is also at 5 mil/year and to prove that theyre not through they are also bringing in john abraham to try and get a deal done with him. he would be the most expensive f.a. yet. unbelievable!

What is the deal with Archuleta?

I hear that he plays more like a LB than a Safety and that he has next to no coverage skills. I remember hearing that the team he goes to has to play to a very specific pattern in order to accomodate him.

Seems like alot of money.

There is no way Washington can be under the cap. I haven't heard one contract getting re-structured to fit in the new players.

Snyder should save all that money and just write a check to Paul Tagliabue and The NFL and request the Lombardi Trophy for the 2006 Season. He'd stand a better chance if he did that.

You'd think Danny would have learned a lesson the last time he tried to purchase a championship.
He went out and got Bruce Smith, Mark Carrier and Deion Sanders........and he got nothing in return.

I hope the Redskins fall on their faces next season.

Maybe Snyder is raising ticket prices again for admission to the Skins training camp to raise money for these extravagant signing bonuses?

That organization must be nuts. They had pretty decent chemistry on the field last year, a top-ranked defense, and they are still tinkering. Maybe they will learn the lesson of the Yankees when they find out you need team-oriented personnel, rather than just a bunch of individuals.

However, the difference between the Redskins and Yankees is that the Skins think they have bought themselves a bunch of superstars, when in reality they have drastically overpaid for moderate talent.

This belongs in the NFL threads!

Synder will probably over spend then cut some much needed players later, in two seasons El will probably be unemployeed

I put it in the Steelers thread because of the impact of someone like Archuleta getting this kind of money may (and probably will) have on signing Hope and, next year, Polamalu. I noted that at the conclusion of my post.

The argument for Hope not getting a bigger contract has been that the going rate for safeties has been $2 million per year. That is out the window now - furthermore, with the Redskins having signed Archuleta a team looking for a safety may now spend more for Hope than it was planning to.
