The Competition
The 2010 Four Nations tournament will be played in Australia and New Zealand during October and November. The tournament will be the second time the Four Nations has been held, following on from the 2009 edition held in England and France. The series will be contested between Australia, England, New Zealand and winners of the 2009 Pacific Cup, Papua New Guinea, after they defeated the Cook Islands 42-14. The 2010 series is the second of three Four Nations series planned before the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, with the venues rotating between the Northern & Southern hemispheres. The 2011 Four Nations will be held in Europe and teams competing for a spot will feature in the 2010 European Cup which features France, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The competition is in a "mini-league" format, each team will play each other once, with the top two teams making the final. Competition Structure The following competition points system shall apply: two competition points shall be awarded for a win; one competition point for a draw, and no competition points for a defeat. The 2 Participants at the top of the Tournament table shall compete in the Final. Equal Points – Round Games If two or more Participants finish equal on competition points after completion of the pool games their relative positions in the Tournament table shall be determined as follows: • the team having the greater points difference shall be placed above a team with a lesser points difference (points difference is calculated by subtracting the match points scored against a team from the match points scored by the team); if the teams are still equal then • the team having the greater points percentage shall be placed above a team with a lesser points percentage (points percentage is calculated by dividing the number of points scored by a team by the number of points it concedes and multiplying by 100); if the teams are still equal then • the team who has scored the most tries in all the round games will be placed above a team who has scored less tries; if the teams are still equal then • the team who has kicked the most goals in all the round games will be placed above a team who has kicked less goals; if the teams are still equal then • the team who has kicked the most drop goals will be placed above a team who has kicked less drop goals; if the teams are still equal then • as between two teams, the team who won the match between the relevant two teams shall be placed above the other team; if the teams are still equal then • the team (s) to go through will be decided on the toss of a coin. If three countries are involved all three countries will toss a coin and the country with the only head or tail will go through (i.e. if two countries have a head and one has a tail the country with a tail will go through). If all three countries have a head or a tail this process will be repeated until one country has the only head or tail. If or when only two countries are equal then the toss will be made by the Tournament Organiser with the first country alphabetically having the right to call "heads or tails", if that country predicts the toss successfully it shall proceed to the final and if it fails to predict successfully the other team shall proceed to the final, if a country fails to send a representative to the toss then the Tournament Organiser shall nominate somebody to represent that country at the toss. Drawn Match - Final If the Final is tied after 80 minutes play then the game will go to Golden Point whereby the first scorer of any point or points will be declared the winner. The Referee will coordinate a coin toss, with the winner electing either a preferred choice of end or the right to kick off. The first period of extra time will be 5 minutes maximum after which each team will change ends and the receiving team from the first period will kick off the next period. Play will continue until a point or points are scored. The Referee will blow full time immediately after any point is scored. If the Golden Point is a try, there will be no conversion attempt. |
