Default Steelers Report Card: Game eight vs. Bengals

Steelers Report Card: Game eight vs. Bengals
Tuesday, November 09, 2010
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
.
QUARTERBACK: B-

Ben Roethlisberger passed for 144 of his 163 yards and one touchdown in the first half, but no throw was bigger than the 36-yarder to Mike Wallace on third-and-2, setting up a touchdown. But he floated a bad interception in the fourth quarter that was unnecessary, leading to a Bengals touchdown. The second-best pass was Antwaan Randle El's 39-yard touchdown to Wallace.

RUNNING BACKS: C+

It was feast or famine for RB Rashard Mendenhall, who had three runs of 18 or more yards, but also had a bunch of runs for 0 or negative yardage. His 20-yard run in the second series set up a field goal. But, when it mattered most, Mendenhall pounded out 43 yards on seven carries after the Bengals cut the lead to 27-21, though the effort went for naught.

WIDE RECEIVERS: B+

Mike Wallace got behind CB Leon Hall for a 36-yard catch to the Bengals' 9 on third-and-2, setting up the second touchdown. And his 24-yard catch led to a field goal at the end of the half. Hines Ward's fumble after a short catch was recovered by the Bengals and led to a touchdown that cut the lead to 10-7. But he made a nice catch with LB Brandon Johnson on his back for an 8-yard touchdown reception.

OFFENSIVE LINE: C

It could have been worse with injuries to G Chris Kemoeatu (ankle) and C Maurkice Pouncey (right leg) in span of three plays in the second quarter and the loss of RT Max Starks (neck). That forced G Doug Legursky to play center and T Jonathan Scott play left guard before Pouncey returned. At least they converted their first goal-line opportunity, this time with Legursky in the backfield.

DEFENSIVE LINE: B-

The Bengals kept getting good yards on a stretch play with Cedric Benson in the first quarter, gaining 37 yards on eight carries. After that, though, he managed just 17 yards on 10 more carries -- still the highest by an opposing back this season. NT Casey Hampton took a costly roughing-the-passer penalty that aided a Cincinnati scoring drive that made it 27-21.

LINEBACKERS: B

Lawrence Timmons continues to be the best and most active player on the field. He had an interception to set up a touchdown, two passes defensed and made a tackle for a loss on third-and-2 that resulted in a missed field goal. James Farrior wasn't far behind, making five tackles, including two in coverage, and had a sack. LaMarr Woodley was a beast collapsing the pocket.

DEFENSIVE BACKS: D

Carson Palmer threw a couple touchdowns to Terrell Owens, who had 10 catches for 141 yards and drew a big pass-interference penalty. CB William Gay made several good plays in the first, but got beat down the hash marks for a 19-yard score by Owens. And CB Bryant McFadden let Owens bet behind him for a 27-yard touchdown. Ike Taylor had two big pass-interference calls in the fourth quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A

Two big plays early set the tone and led to a 10-0 lead. Rookie Emmanuel Sanders forced a fumble on the opening kickoff, resulting in a touchdown. And William Gay blocked a punt that led to a field goal. Jeff Reed's 53-yard FG tied a career high and made him 11 of 12 on the road. The only real mistake was Scott's 46-yard kick return, the longest against them this season.

COACHING: D

Three consecutive penalties for 50 yards and ill-advised throwing nearly resulted in a blown 20-point lead. Give credit to offensive coordinator Bruce Arians for going for a score after the Bengals missed a 51-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the half. It resulted in a field goal. Why was Roethlisberger throwing with a 13-point lead, on three consecutive plays from the Bengals' 45 that took 35 seconds?

(We are winning in spite of Airhead Arians not because of him. - mesa)

well, i don't agree with giving special teams an "A", but they did a good job.

Reed hooks a field goal and misses and drives at least 2 poor kick-off's to around the 15 (instead of drilling them to the end zone where he's supposed to......again).
And you have one long run back on a kick-off setting up great field position.
Yes, they caused a fumble and blocked a punt, and thats great.
But its also getting to the point where Reed is so bad, that just because he makes one field goal, everyone's singing his praises. Thats what he's supposed to do. What about the miss and the poor kick-offs?
I'd put ST's more in the B/B- category. Very good job, but still could've been better.

The LB'ing was a solid B if not more of an A-.
The secondary...that really needs addressed. 2 weeks in a row in the "D" category range and we have Brady coming up next week.

When you miss a FG to ice the game, you cannot get an A on special teams. These are the pressure kicks Reed is supposed to make, but has been missing. Two v Ravens, potential game winner v Falcons, potential game ice v Bengals. When/if we need him to win a game for us (say on the road v Ravens) with a 45 yarder in the final minute...I will not have any confidence.

Special teams let up a runback when they need a stuff the most.

RB's, partly poor playing calling but I thought they didnt better than a flat B

LB's, an A, the pass coverage was not the LB, it was taylor, troy, gay etc. C minus at best. when the game came down to it, a LB had to shut down shipley. Not our poor pass coverage secondary.

We knew every play for the most part what they were doing, stuffed the run, and even when the boig screen flashed, the bengals are passing, we could not stop them. Made another average at best QB look great again.
