Default Where We Rank

I just had a look at the stats and we are at the bottom of the barrel in offense (24th in total offense). Yet we have the #1 rushing defense and are in the top ten in total defense.

I understand the defense has had some problems but the majority of this teams problems are with the stagnant offense.

It was the case already last year. Arians MUST go and the OL needs serious upgrading.

Arians holds a GIANT plastic coated play sheet which has three plays..the rest of it is the Primanti's menu! Really...if it were 3rd and 20 and he would call for a quartback sneak over the pile for one yard and let Ben lay there 'til the defense touched him! UGGGGGGH!

When your offensive game plan is RUN RUN SACK... and go 3 and out all night it tends to wear a defense down...

Arians is a turd.
The OL needs so much upgrading its scary.
Ben needs to throw the damn ball.
When Ben actually puts the ball in the receivers hands they actually need to catch the damn thing...

While having a great run defense is wonderful...some of that is due to the fact that our pass defense has gone to crap (more than it already was).

We had a discussion about this before the Saints game about the overall stats of the pass defense, and I defended them then because despite their low ranking (which has only gotten lower...26th now), they weren't allowing many TDs or points, just yards. It was extremely bend but don't break.

Well now, it's broken.

-Before (and after) the Saints game, the Steelers D was first in points allowed. They are now 5th. And in 3 weeks went from 13.7 ppg to 18 ppg. Yeah, I know...that's not horrible, but it's a bad trend in only 3 games.
-They had only allowed 4 passing TD's to that point (in 6 games)...that number has almost tripled to 11 passing TD's allowed (that's 7 in 3 games).
-Steelers D had 9 INTs in the first 6 games. They have 2 in the last 3.

The offense has pretty much stayed where they were for the first 6 games (scoring wise) by .6 ppg to 22.2 ppg. They are +8 in the TO category, which is VERY important. That means that while they may not score everytime they get to the EZ, they're not coughing the ball up much either.

Other than yards per game, they're pretty much middle of the pack. Getting rid of Arians would be a good start, but dropped passes have begun to become an issue again too. That's just poor execution that is costing points.

Defense IMO has a lot more to work on than the offense does though. Not giving the O a pass or anything, b/c they need some fixing too...but they've been slipping more than any other facet of the game as of late.

Stats don't mean shit.

Fantasy football has ruined the NFL.

Agreed - I put this in another thread but the statistcal analysis fits here

New York Times article today focuses on net yards per pass attempt as a good measure for on the field success

Dominant teams tend to pass much more efficiently than their opponents.. . Of the 44 Super Bowl winners, 37 of them averaged at least 1 net yard per pass attempt more than they allowed.

http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2...od/?ref=sports

I checked out how recent Steelers teams were ranked for this stat

2005 Steelers gained 7.1 yards per pass attempt and gave up 5.3 per attempt (+1.8) and ranked third in net yards allowed per pass attempt

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...s/pit/2005.htm

2008 Steelers gained 5.9 yards per pass attempt and gave up 4.3 per attempt (+1.6) and ranked first in net yards allowed per pass attempt

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...s/pit/2008.htm

2010 Steelers gain 6.9 yards per attempt and give up 6.3 per attempt (+0.6) and currently rank 17th in net yards allowed by the defense per pass attempt

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...s/pit/2010.htm

LeBeau's style of defense by pressuring the QB and keeping everything in front of the secondary has resulted in a low net yards per pass attempt in the past - that has come apart as the pass defense is now middle of the pack or worse

I agree that Arians' run, run, try to go deep with 5 second routes which ends with 6 pump fakes and an image of midgets trying to take down king kong (Ben) with a 8 yard sack, is frustrating. Especially when it happens so often.

We know our line cannot give us time to pass, so why not put some rb screens, play-action in there to mix it up?

Also the defense-backs and the 10-15 yard cushions isn't working anymore. It stopped working last year when the team spiraled. We need another cover corner, badly!

Just think if the dbs could give the lb's an extra second. They would have so much more pressure. it beats watching on of our lb's get beat time and time again by the slot receiver or tight end.

If these things don't work we need a change in some personnel....
