Default Reed vs. Suisham? No contest

Reed vs. Suisham? No contest
http://communityvoices.sites.post-ga...ham-no-contest

Nobody asked me, but . . .

* The Steelers decision to cut Jeff Reed, an established veteran kicker, for Shaun Suisham, who was out of work 10 weeks into the NFL season, was peculiar, to say the least. Maybe the Steelers know something about Reedís current mental makeup that prompted the move. But if Iím playing in the Super Bowl tomorrow, and I have my pick between Reed and Suisham as my kicker, Iím not even thinking twice before I take Reed.

* There seems to be an indication the Pirates will attempt to be more of a factor in the free-agent market this offseason. Before getting giddy over this possibility, keep the following in mind: Pittsburgh is not a favorite destination of free-agent players; the Pirates have not recently been known to overpay -- except, of course, in the case of Japanese second basemen.

* Although the following will label me by some, if not many, as a Bruce Arians apologist, here are some informative statistics. In Arians first three seasons as offensive coordinator, 2007-09, the Steelers finished first, sixth and third in time of possession.

* I wrote last year that Jamie Dixon was the best coach in Pittsburgh. Let me repeat that: Jamie Dixon is the best coach in Pittsburgh.

* It is rather amazing that after all these years not only canít the Steelers stop Tom Brady, they barely can slow him down.

* The Clint Hurdle hire by the Pirates was a good one and represents a significant improvement over John Russell. But I donít necessarily understand the dancing in the streets done by some. Hurdle is 534-625 and in the eight seasons he managed the Colorado Rockies they finished last or next to last six times.

* Suisham has made 79 percent of his NFL field goal tries, which is pretty good, but heís best known for a miss. With his Washington Redskins leading New Orleans by seven points with 1:52 remaining in a game last December, Suisham was called upon to kick what almost certainly would have been a victory-securing field goal. He missed. From 23 yards. New Orleans won in overtime and Suisham was cut about 48 hours later.

* Like Hurdle, Gene Lamont also managed eight years. His winning percentage was .496, compared to HurdleĎs .461. In those eight seasons, Lamontís teams finished last or next to last twice. I wonder what the reaction would have been if Lamont were named Pirates manager?

* What a tough break for Pitt defensive end Greg Romeus, who tore his ACL in his first game after returning from back surgery. Romeus rejected the NFL draft to play his senior season. His reward: parts of two games and two major injuries.

* Idiots who should have their football voting rights removed: The writer/broadcaster who voted for Delaware in the AP poll; the coach who voted for Penn State in the USA Today poll.
* Interesting question to ponder: Of Pittsburgh five best-known coaches, who will be fired first: Dan Bylsma; Jamie Dixon; Clint Hurdle, Mike Tomlin; Dave Wannstedt? Interesting question to ponder: Of Pittsburgh's five best-known coaches, who will be fired first: Dan Bylsma; Jamie Dixon; Clint Hurdle, Mike Tomlin; Dave Wannstedt?

?

Well...we're NOT playing in the super bowl. We could sit around and "if" every player on the team.
And second, lets see how suisham works out. He can't be any worse than Reed, especially poor kicking off (which hurts us even more)
You can't just go on Reed's "past" stats. Things change.

Reed had become a problem: unreliable and a malcontent with delusions of grandeur who wanted a spectacular new contract - and quickly showed why he didn't deserve one. Bring someone else in and get rid of him. I don't care what he did 2-3 years ago - what's he doing now? Lousy kickoffs and FGAs. Good riddance to garbage and a royal pain in the a$$..

Reed + Holmes = 2 big mistakes by the FO this year.

And over the period from 2007 - 2009: finished 9th, 20th, and 12th in points scored; and 17th, 22nd, and 7th in yards gained.

While the staistics for this year (16th in points, 24th in yards gained) arguably are skewed by Roethlisberger's suspension, the body of work is that of a mediocre offense that has been carried by the defense. - with the defense slipping that hopefully is no longer regarded to be acceptable

I think he will do well in the regular season, but this decision may come back to bite the Steelers later in the year.

Why? Because Reed would suddenly stop doing drugs, drop the d-bag act and become a good kicker? After experiencing the 5 game losing streak last year, I think the FO decided this year they don't need his bad attitude in the locker room and, given his poor kicking, it's best to get rid of him. Having spent the better part of my corporate career in management, I can tell you that when times are tough, you don't want someone bad mouthing management, ownership, decision making, customers (fans), etc. When that happens you escort them to the door and fail to provide any references. Reed has some serious side issues here and I wouldn't be surprised if it's wrapped in drugs.

In the end, I blame Harrison for not giving this punk a beating at the beginning of the year for acting like a fool. Kickers should be seen (eg: kicking deep into the endzone or making 26 yard field goals), not heard (eg: calling the Rooneys liars, the fans jerks, the field sh!tty).

He's known for missing big kicks late in the season and in playoffs. He might be perfect, but maybe in a game that decides a bye-week or not he'll suck, maybe in the playoffs he'll miss a game winning field goal.

I'm not really defending Reed's mistakes, but its just a "what if" type situation.

I'm just speculating, I hope he does well, but the past 6 seasons he gets cut and signed by the same team because first 13 games he's perfect, after that he seems to be terrible.

It's not any of the illegal drugs that are kicking his azz-- it's the legal one, ALCOHOL. Didn't you read about any of his off-the field antics ths last few seasons? Kicking towel dispensers off the wall at the corner store, fighting with cops when they tried to stop Matt Spaeth from pissing in a plant potter out on the sidewalk when he was drunk-- all sounds like the typical mularkey that college freshman or military enlisted are usually up to during the wee hours of the night....
