PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, November 28, 2010

Three former Steelers players, including center Dermontti Dawson and running back Jerome Bettis, are among the 26 semi-finalists for the Pro Football's Hall of Fame Class of 2011.

Also making the cut after the Hall of Fame selection committee paired down a list of 114 nominees are former Steelers outside linebacker Kevin Greene and running back Curtis Martin, a former Allderdice and Pitt star.

The list of nominees, which were announced by the Hall of Fame today, will be reduced to 15 in January. The Hall's newest inductees will be selected the day before the Super Bowl in early February.

Dawson, considered one of the premier centers of his era, was a finalist for the Hall of Fame last year. Bettis and Martin are among the five former players that made it to the semi-finals the first year they are eligible for the Hall of Fame.

Bettis ranks fifth at 13,662 yards in 13 seasons, three for the Rams and a decade with the Steelers, with whom he won the 2006 Super Bowl in his final game.

Martin retired from the New York Jets as the No. 4 overall rusher with 14,101 yards in 11 seasons. One of the most consistent backs of his era, he ran for 1,000 yards in 10 straight seasons.

The list will be cut to 17, including senior committee nominees Chris Hanburger, a Redskins linebacker from 1965-78, and Les Richter, a Rams linebacker from 1954-62. Between four and seven enshrinees no more than five modern-day nominees can make it will be announced Feb. 5, the day before the Super Bowl. The actual enshrinement will be in August.
