Default martinsville: who to watch/ who will win?

the bump and run has been the hot topic this week and one only needs to defer to jeff gordon to find out when it is o.k. to use this tactic. now this is very complex, and the gordon rules are not really defined but this is what i can make of them.

1. its not ok to bump and run your teammate. anyone remember jeff and jj have an on track incident?
2. while i prefer drivers who drive all others the same and dont carry grudges and paybacks on the track, this really is not the accepted method. drivers must now go the extra mile to exact revenge.
3. it is not ok to bump and run somebody in the 1st 70 laps in the race even if a slower car (gordon) is holding up a much faster car (stewart). the same manuver is ok in the last 70 laps of the race.
4. spinning k. bush is ok at any time (see the spring race at martinsville last year) unfortunately for gordon bush has the ears of an elephant and like jimmy spencer im sure he never forgets.
5. while the bump and run is usually reserved for short tracks, if youre a gordon teammate it is ok in a non points race on a superspeedway where death is much more possible (see vickers and bliss in last years all star race.
6. every driver who employs this tactic must be clairvoyant. they must know before hand if their manuver will move the car or cause it to wreck. this is very restrictive being that only gordon has this clairvoyance.

confused? i certainly am. call me old school, ive always believed you pass somebody by going around them, not through them. i guess the definition of a pass is an evolving thing. even though gordon proved a car 3 laps down can come back to win at martinsville all front runners will expect all lap cars to move to the upper grove and go more laps down, rather than actually try and race for a decent finish. while patience is often preached it is rarely practiced. this weeks race should be an exciting wreckfest with lots of people getting pissed off. many good cars will probably be lapped early, and no driver wants to give up 100 laps into a 500 lap race.

jeff gordon is the hands down favorite to win this race. he swept both races here last year and has a total of 7 victories.
j. johnson is on the pole. when jj starts up front he usually stays up front. he will be nearly impossible to beat off pit row, especially under caution.
kurt bush in rustys equipment at a short track. enough said
matt kenseth- if he keeps doing what hes been doing he must be looked at as a favorite.
t. stewart- has proven he can dominate and win at just about any type of track. he led more than half the laps at the 2 races at martinsville last year. impressive.

for darkhorses i will be watching k. kahne, b. labonte (him and the #43 team have done well here. add r. loomis to the mix and another top 5 finish could very easilly be in the making), b. vickers to have one of his best runs of the year and r. gordon. it is important for t. raines to have a good run to keep h.o.f. racing in the top 35 in points. i think this can be j. mcmurrays week to prove that he is in the right car to do some damage. a top 5 finish and even a win would not suprise me at all.

bold prediction: only 1 rookie will finish on the lead lap. right now i am leaning towards m. truex.

now the really tough part:

1. kurt bush- huge bulls eye on his back. EVERYONE will be looking to spin him out as if he were the first driver to ever do it to anyone else.
2. jeff gordon- almost impossible not to pick him to win, especially now that he has declared he will start driving through people to get the win.
3. tony stewart- i really want to pick him to win. for him to go 5 races without being in victory lane is almost unbelievable.
4. jimmy johnson- just his starting position and pit row choise could be enough for the victory.
5. matt kenseth- he is matt kenseth, his pit crew has been top notch since hes been in the series. his pit stall could hurt him though
6. k. kahne- for no other reason that hes been doing good all year

watch for veterans like j. nemecheck, d. jarrett, k. schrader and k. petty in that order. their veteran status should help at this track.

nice picks and i like your bold prediction (anything can, and probably will, happen). dale and martin have some ground to cover but both are definitely capable.
