Default Sanders, Brown may both play against the Ravens

Sanders, Brown may both play against the Ravens
November 30th, 2010

Battling for a hat.

Two dogs and only one bone.

That is how Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has framed, as only he can, the ongoing competition between rookie wide receivers Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown for one game day roster spot.

The competition took a somewhat unexpected turn two weeks ago when both dressed against the Raiders.

With Brown apparently healthy again after a knee problem sidelined him last week, Tomlin strongly hinted the two will play Sunday night in Baltimore.

“There may well be two dogs and two bones,” he said with a smile Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

If that happens, it will be interesting to see if Tomlin dresses six wide receivers as he did against the Raiders -- or if Arnaz Battle or even Antwaan Randle El is inactive for the crucial AFC North game.

Battle has been a key special teams player but he has yet to catch a pass this season.

Randle El and Sanders have been sharing the role of No. 3 wide receiver, but he former has not caught a pass in the Steelers’ last two games and is becoming less and less of a factor in the end zone.

It is hard to imagine the Steelers only dressing seven offensive linemen Sunday as they did against the Raiders.

Steelers-Ravens games are always brutal, hard-hitting affairs, and the line has gotten too beat up this season to think that Tomlin would go into the crucial AFC North contest with only two reserve linemen.

With cornerback Bryant McFadden’s hamstring also a concern, Tomlin probably won’t try to get by with one less defensive back against the Ravens.

One possibility if Tomlin does dress six wide receivers is sitting Matt Spaeth another week and using guard Trai Essex as an extra tight end.

Spaeth is still recovering from a concussion, and the Steelers had success running the ball against the Bills when they played Essex at tight end.
