Woodley lays lumber on QBs

PITTSBURGH — “Steelers defense brings the Wood.”

That’s what a banner hanging at Heinz Field said Sunday. It was a prophetic tribute to LaMarr Woodley, the “other” outside linebacker.

With James Harrison getting so much notoriety for how well he’s played this season and for all the times he’s been fined by the NFL, Woodley has been somewhat flying under the radar.

But truth be told, Woodley has been playing very well. And in Sunday’s 23-7 win, he played his best game yet this season.

On Nov. 8 when the Steelers won in Cincinnati, Woodley recorded two sacks. In the rematch, he again had two sacks. But this time, he punctuated his performance by returning an interception 14 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

It was Woodley’s first pick-six at any level of football.

“Good thing I didn’t have to run a long distance because it takes me a while to get to the end zone,” said Woodley, who did return a fumble 77 yards for a TD last year in a win against Minnesota.

“I just made sure I got the ball and didn’t run out of bounds. I just ran in. It was a great feeling and it put more points on the board for us.”

When coach Mike Tomlin was asked about Woodley’s performance, he said “He provided plays, but he owed us.”

Tomlin was referring to the offsides penalty called against Woodley on the Bengals’ third play of the game. On a third-and-2 play, quarterback Carson Palmer threw incomplete. But the Bengals got a fresh set of downs because Woodley jumped and was flagged for being offside.

Seven plays later, the Bengals scored their only touchdown of the game.

“I was feeling a little down after allowing them to score a touchdown after that third-down situation when I jumped offsides,” Woodley said. “Jumping offsides and letting a team like Cincinnati drive down the field and put seven on the board, that was definitely on me. But my teammates were very supportive, telling me that it was no big deal and to just keep my head in the game and go out there and make plays.

“I was able to go out there and make plays. Coach (Dick) LeBeau put me in position and we did a great job as a team.”

Last year, both Harrison and Woodley made it to the Pro Bowl. That probably won’t happen again this year. Harrison has a good chance to make it back to the NFL’s all-star game for the fourth straight year. He has 10 sacks, which after Sunday, had him tied for fifth among NFL sack leaders.

Woodley was one of seven players tied for 13th with 8.5 sacks.

In 2008, Harrison (16) and Woodley (11.5) combined for 27.5 sacks. That’s the most ever by a linebacker duo in franchise history.

A fourth-year pro taken in the second round of the 2007 draft, Woodley now has 37.5 sacks. No other Steeler has ever had that many sacks in his first four seasons.

Woodley holds an NFL record for posting two sacks in each of the first four playoff games he’s played in.

“We’ve still got a lot of games to go. I have to continue to do it,” Woodley said. “I had a great game (Sunday), but I have to show up again next week and for the rest of the season so we can get to that Super Bowl.”

Well we have 3 games left, 2 against below average teams and one against a overrated QB. Should be good games for the D.
