Ryan full of praise for Steelers
December 15th, 2010

Rex Ryan, the colorful coach of the Jets, did not provide any bulletin-board material during a conference call with Pittsburgh reporters today.

Ryan did prove to be his usual entertaining self.

And the overriding theme that emerged as the former Ravens defensive coordinator provided one sound bite after another: the admiration he has for the Steelers and their style of play.

“I hated them when I was in Baltimore but I always respected them, and I hope they felt the same way about me when I was there,” said Ryan, whose team will try to snap a two-game losing streak Sunday. “Those safeties knock the heck out of you, those outside ‘backers are about as good as it gets in this league. You have (Troy) Polamalu flying all over the place making big plays, these big hits. I love the way they play the game.

“I definitely told the team that this is my kind of game. I’ve seen a lot of guys come down with the Pittsburgh flu back in the day. All of the sudden a guy won’t play in the game, ‘Oh, I’m just not right.’ I’ve seen it happen. They don’t want to face Pittsburgh. I know we’ll have a whole plane full of guys coming down there and it’s going to be a great atmosphere. That’s old-fashioned football.”

Ryan also had good if not glowing things to say about Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

He said he appreciated Tomlin not running up the score against the Ravens in 2007 when the Steelers took a big lead in the first half and coasted to a 38-7 win at Heinz Field.

“He ran the ball every single snap, it seemed like, in the second half,” Ryan said. “He’s man’s man. I have a lot of respect for him.”

Ryan had nothing but good things to say about former Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes, whom the Jets traded for last April.

According to Ryan’s math, Holmes has won four games for the Jets this season.

He said Holmes has also been a model teammate and a good fit with the Jets.

One thing he would not concede when it comes to the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII: that Holmes was in the end zone when he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass late in the Steelers’ 13-9 win at Baltimore in 2008.

Had Holmes been ruled down inside the Ravens’ 1-yard line it would have set up a fourth down with the AFC North title essentially on the line

“It would have been awesome because I guarantee you Tomlin would have gone for it and we would have stopped them,” Ryan said laughing.

I'm surprised that Rex (I'm never too busy to talk about me) Ryan has time for interviews what with having to launder all that money and get it set up in a no-name bank account for Sal Alito as compensation for ol' Sal taking the weight for Ryan over this tripping thing.

I haven't seen this kind of distancing and denial since Watergate.

I find it hilarious that a guy like Ryan who is original and puts some entertainment in a position that usually has a bunch of schlepy bores is liked and admired one week, and then his team goes on a 2 game losing streak, and all of a sudden he is an undisciplined coach. Goes to show you how hypocritical and two-faced the media and everything around tabloid crap is.

I hope to hear the same speech he gave in the post-game presser at New England.

Well for that matter, don't you think that the whole idea of NFL press conferences is a little silly to begin with?

How important is it to have some losing coach sit there looking as if someone just shot his dog, explaining to a bunch of couch potatoes what went wrong on 3rd and Six with four minutes left in the fourth quarter? Do any one of us actually "NEED" these weekly briefings and debriefings? I mean, it's not as if we have any input or that anything we have to say amounts to a hill of beans as far as game plans go, right?

Boring or not, the whole thing is really rather pointless, no?

just a veiled attempt to take a shot at belichick. what a dumbass. no team thrives on being dissed or "locker room material" more than the patriots (no matter how much the players say they dont need or use this stuff for motivation to get up for a game).

you damn well better believe that 'chick will play this for his team the next time they meet, and you can bet that they spank his red swollen bottom even worse.
