Let's hear it for Ike Taylor!

Nobody asked me about the Steelers, but . . .

* For a guy who’s never made the Pro Bowl, and probably never came close, and who has taken a heap of abuse over the years, Ike Taylor has quietly fashioned himself a fine career. How many players can say they were the best cornerback on two Super Bowl champions?

* There is a notion out and about that Cleveland will be a dangerous opponent for the Steeler Sunday because ``they have nothing to play for.’’ Actually, that’s why they’re not a dangerous opponent.

* Mike Tomlin won’t likely be the NFL Coach of the Year, but based on a probable 12-win season and the obstacles he had to overcome, he deserves serious consideration.

* At 1,237 yards, Rashard Mendenhall already has the eighth best season in Steelers history. He should surpass Franco Harris, whose best season was 1,246, and might surpass Willie Parker, who is sixth at 1,316.

* The Steelers offensive line is not good, but nor is it as bad as many make it out to be.

* It seems like everyone is handing the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award to Troy Polamalu. And he may well deserve it. But about six weeks ago there were a lot of complaints about his play.

* There might be 10 people in the country qualified to vote for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

* The offensive explosion by the Jets against Chicago yesterday -- 34 points, 393 yards against the No. 8 defense in the league -- makes the Steelers performance against them seven days earlier all the more impressive.

* Another thought as to why the Browns will give the Steelers trouble is because of the rivalry between the teams. Actually, there is a rivalry between the cities and a rivalry between the Steelers and the old Cleveland Browns, but not much of one at all between the present teams.

* The Pro Bowl selections come out this week. It will be interesting to see if any Steelers make it on offense and how many make it on defense. Mike Wallace has the best chance on offense.

* James Harrison is tied for seventh in the NFL with 11 sacks but has only one in the past four games. LaMarr Woodley is tied for 17th with 8 ½ but has only two in the past five games.

* What was written above is not to suggest the Steelers cannot lose to the Browns. They can. But if they do it will because they played poorly and not because the Browns have nothing to play for or because of the rivalry that exists between the teams.

* I might not want to bet on it, but the Steelers can beat the New England Patriots.

* Ben Roethlisberger is fifth in the AFC in passer rating, fifth in yards per game, fourth in touchdown/interception ratio and second, behind Philip Rivers, in yards per attempt.

Ike is still a slightly above average corner. He's not a Pro Bowl-caliber player and last year proved that.
