Default Steelers Notebook: Woodley gets full sack, ties Harrison's record

Steelers Notebook: Woodley gets full sack, ties Harrison's record
Thursday, January 06, 2011
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

LaMarr Woodley celebrates his touchdown after an interception in the fourth quarter of a game against the Bengals at Heinz Field. Elias Sports Bureau credited Woodley with a sack from Sunday's win against Cleveland, giving him 10 for the season.

Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley tied a team record Wednesday without playing a game.

After a film review by Elias Sports Bureau, Woodley was credited with a full sack in the Steelers' victory Sunday in Cleveland, not a half-sack that he initially was awarded along with fellow linebacker Larry Foote.

That means Woodley finished the regular season with 10 sacks, marking the third consecutive season in which he has registered double-digit sacks. The only other player in team history to do that is outside linebacker James Harrison, who has posted 16, 10 and 10 1/2 sacks, respectively, in the past three seasons.
Rush to judgment

Despite playing 10 games without defensive end Aaron Smith and six without defensive end Brett Keisel, the Steelers finished with the best rush defense in franchise history, allowing just 1,004 yards -- third fewest in a 16-game schedule in NFL history.

Only the 2000 Baltimore Ravens (970) and the 2006 Minnesota Vikings (985) allowed fewer rushing yards in a 16-game season.

The Steelers easily bested their previous record of 1,125 yards, set in 1953 in a 12-game season. Their per-game average of 62.8 yards easily broke the team record of 74.7, set in 2001 in a 16-game season.
Few happy returns

The kick coverage against the Browns was not just the best of the 16-game season, it was the best in the NFL in three years.

The Browns averaged just 9.1 yards on eight kick returns against the Steelers, who squibbed each kick in an attempt to keep the ball away from return specialist Joshua Cribbs. That was the lowest return average in a game (minimum five attempts) since the Chicago Bears held the Green Bay Packers to a 7.3 average Dec. 23, 2007, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

The Browns had four returns less than 8 yards and none longer than 17. Their average starting field position on those kicks was their 25.

Woodley does much less than Harrison other than sacks....I'm not saying he is not good but not break the bank good.

A sack is a sack is a sack no matter if you were blocked or not! That just means the o-lineman guessed wrong on coverage of who was blitzing!

a sack as a result of not being blocked or...

a sack where the rest of your team forces the QB to you after you have been easily blocked by a TE or...

a coverage sack
