Ward: Young WRs 'don't have a clue' about playoffs
January 6th, 2011

Apparently the Steelers’ bye week goes by another name as well.

“This week is young guys emphasis week,” veteran wide receiver Hines Ward said. “They’re getting a lot of reps.”

Steelers’ wide receivers Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Browns, also got an earful from Ward this week.

He stayed on them about maintaining their focus in position meetings as well as in practice even though the Steelers’ don’t play until Jan. 15 when they host an AFC divisional playoff game.

Ward’s vigilance in monitoring the concentration level of the young wideouts stems from a simple fact: none of the three have ever suited up for an NFL playoff game.

“They don’t have a clue, what they’re about to step into,” Ward said. “They only know what the veterans tell them.”

Ward surely told the postseason newbies about his first playoff game in 2001 against the Ravens.

On Steelers’ first offensive play, Ward said, he got “popped in the mouth.”

And on a running play no less.

I got (mad) so I played angry, but that’s what it’s all about,” Ward said. “There’s no tomorrow. That’s what makes our sport so great.

“We don’t have series like hockey and baseball and basketball where you lose a game and you’ve got a chance the next day. That’s why every play is magnified. If you drop a crucial third-down (pass) you never know, that might be the difference between winning or losing that game.

Ward is a tough teacher from what I hear. Wallace (jokingly) complained all season long this year and last that he can't do anything right in Ward's eyes.

Here's hoping he returns as a coach after he retires. Blocking wideouts will become a Pittsburgh trademark for years to come!

Ward would make a good coach, he knows the game really well. And how to play it to a high standard.

Nice to see Ward holding their feet to the fire making sure they can deliver when called upon. A lot of dropped passes and being knocked out in the Divisional Round would be a shitty way to end an otherwise good season.
