Well seeing that if the team that gets the ball 1st scores a TD, the game is over you'd have to be moron to let the other team have the ball first. We've given up plenty of kickoff returns for TD, I don't ever see Tomlin allowing the other team to take the field first.

This is an absurd approach. Seriously. How could a coach give the ball to the other team knowing it's over if they score a TD. Take the ball! If your D is as good like the OP stated, then depend on them to make the stop AFTER you scored your points. Here's how I see it:

KICK the ball. They score TD. You go home.

RECEIVE the ball. Score TD. They go home. Score FG or don't score anything and you still have a fighting chance with your D.

How could anyone feel that kicking the ball is the right option? I always thought Cowher was a great coach, but his choice makes me wonder!

Exactly! You never want to give the ball to the opponent in OT.
