Smith still hopeful about playing against Ravens

January 13th, 2011

He won’t be a game-time decision but apparently it will be close to that for Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith.

Smith is scheduled to have an MRI taken on his left arm today, and he and the Steelers will get results of that scan Saturday.

Smith, who has not practiced since partially tearing his left triceps in an Oct. 24 game, is holding out hope that he will play against the Ravens, assuming he gets good news from his latest MRI.

“I would love to (play) but it depends on what the staff and doctors think,” Smith said after the Steelers’ final practice of the week.

As for the challenge of playing despite missing so much practice time, Smith said, “I’ve been doing this for 12 years of my life so I think I can go out there and do it. I believe 100 percent in my heart that I can go out there and play football. I wish I was back yesterday but it’s just a time thing.”

Today had a turn-back-the-clock-day feel to it as Bill Cowher was among those that signed in as media at Steelers’ headquarters.

Cowher made a quick trip to Pittsburgh to interview Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward and James Harrison for CBS, which is televising Saturday’s AFC divisional playoff game.

Cowher, a studio analyst for CBS’ “The NFL Today,” watched practice and chatted up Steelers president Art Rooney, director of football operations Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin.

Cowher also talked with the players that suited up for him before he stepped down as Steelers coach in January of 2007.

“It was weird but it was good.” Smith said of seeing Cowher. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen him and it looks like he’s doing well and we just wished the best for each other. We didn’t talk much football.”

Thought I read somewhere on NFL.com that he wouldn't be good to go until the superbowl if we make it.

Love hearing about Cowher being there. I'm sure a lot of his old players appreciated seeing him.

Hope the Chin's visit will give the guys even more motivation to smash those ratbirds even though they don't need it. I wonder what he said to them about the game.

smith has always been my favorite steeler but i dont see what all the fuss is with him returning. i would place him on IR and start practicing another player asap. Hood is playing just as well as Smith ever has and he will only get better. just look at our run defense this year. Hood is a monster and even if Smith was able to play i wouldnt pull Hood for him. a rotation would be nice but no way would i pull Hood for Smith

IR Smith and sign a kicker for kick offs who can put the ball into the end zone.

I hope we don't get into a field position battle with the Ravens as there punter can put the ball inside the 10 with no problem and their kicker deep into the end zone just about every time.
