Default Ravens at Steelers: Five Questions

Ravens at Steelers: Five Questions

Q: What was the most important factor in the Steelers winning the AFC North this season with a 12-4 record?

A: Several reason have factored into the Steelersí success. But perhaps the key has been their improvement in the all-important turnover ratio. Last year, when the Steelers missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record, they were minus-3. This year, they were plus-17

Last year, the Steelersí defense created 22 takeaways (12 interceptions, 10 fumble recoveries) while the offense was guilty of 25 giveaways (14 interceptions, 11 lost fumbles).

But this year, the defense had 35 takeaways (21 interceptions, 14 fumble recoveries) while the offense gave the ball away only 18 times (nine interceptions, nine lost fumbles).

Q: What postseason milestone belongs to LaMarr Woodley?

A: Woodley, the Steelersí left side outside linebacker, is the first player in NFL history to record two sacks in each of his first four playoff games. He had two sacks in a wild-card loss to Jacksonville in 2007 and two sacks in each playoff win against San Diego (divisional playoff game), Baltimore (AFC Championship Game) and Arizona (Super Bowl) in 2008.

Q: Whatís the latest honor bestowed upon Troy Polamalu?

A: On Thursday, the Steelersí star strong safety was named AFC Defensive Player of the Year by NFL 101. Thatís a national media committee comprised of 101 sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL.

The NFL 101 awards are not to be confused with The Associated Press post-season awards. Numerous media outlets present post-season awards, but the NFL only recognizes the AP awards.

In December, Polamalu was named to the Pro Bowl team for the sixth time in his eight-year career and was also named the Steelersí Most Valuable Player after a vote by his teammates.

Q: How have the Steelers fared over the years in playoff games against divisional opponents?

A: Theyíre a perfect 8-0.

Since 2002 when the NFL adopted its current alignment, the Steelers are 2-0 against the Ravens and 1-0 against the Bengals, two of their rivals in the AFC North Division. They were also 3-0 against the Houston Oilers and 2-0 against the Browns when they played in the AFC Central.

Q: How cold will it be Saturday at Heinz Field?

A: The temperature wonít be as low as it was for the Dec. 19 and Dec. 23 home games against the Jets and Panthers when it was 25 and 27 degrees, respectively, at kickoff.

According to The Weather Channel, it will be 32 degrees at 4:30 p.m. Saturday when the Steelers and Ravens kick if off. There is also a 60-to-70 percent chance of snow.

Hmmm... game in the snow.... those can either be fun or hell to watch.

Or they can be postponed... I hope that doesn't happen because I'm going up to PA to watch the game with my family on Saturday. It would suck if they moved it to Monday or Tuesday or something.
