Default Challenge rules need adjusted

Yesterday's game brings this to light. Even though it didn't affect the outcome, it could have and something needs to be done before it does. With just over a quarter to go the Steelers had no challenges and if another bad call had happened to us it could have changed the game.
I told my father in law as soon as we had to challenge on the opening kickoff that the rule was flawed. Even winning that challenge meant we only had one left unless we won the next one. Tomlin had to challenge the Ben fumble, it was too big of a play and with the tuck rule (a flawed rule also) it was a must challenge. And even if you get both of the first 2 right you only get a 3rd, not a 4th or 5th if needed.

Why should we be out of challenges because you keep missing calls!!!!!
The rule should be changed from 2 challenges with a bonus 3rd, to unlimited challenges until you miss 2 of them. So if you challenge and miss twice, then your done. It puts the pressure on the coach to make good challenges, but allows you 1 mistake by challenging an iffy call and losing. This will not slow the game down at all unless the refs blow like 8 calls.

This rule and the "what the hell is a TD catch" rule are the 2 rules that need to be changed. Calvin Johnson and Arian Foster both had TD's taken away this year on obvious catches.

That's fine the way it is. The problem last night wasn't the lack of challenges, it was our atrocious 1/2 half.
Tomlin didn't have to challenge Ben's fumble. It was a fumble. If he has to challenge something, it's Arians' stupid play call at our 10 yds line that lead to this fumble.

I agree 100% that if you win a challenge you should get that challenge back.

And when a coach throws the red flag he should lose a challenge. Harbaugh threw that flag for only one reason and that was to allow his defense to sub on that 4th on 1. I mean wtf, he couldn't see that the down markers said 4th down? He knew what down it was. They should have at least taken a TO away from him, or at the very least not allowed the subs to come in. If a coach throws his flag in a situation like that, or if it is unchallengeable, then he should lose the challenge. Ignorance of the rules or situation should not be an excuse.

You're absolutely right. I was pissed when the refs allowed him to work the system. He was stalling for time without using a TO. If we can see through that BS, why can't the refs. He was making sure his D was set. Total BS. The competition committe needs to look into how to prevent this. Not subbing is a start, but it still allowed the D time to compose itself and align properly.

Dude. It's not fine the way it is. What if Mendy had fumbled on the last drive prior to the 2 minute warning and his knee was clearly down yet the refs ruled it fumble and Baltimore ball. It probably costs us the game. Why should a team be out of challenges just because the refs keep blowing calls. Two missed challenges is the answer. It limits it by making the coach responsible for getting the challenges correct.

The thing that really bugged me about the challenges last night was harbaughs free time out because he threw the flag on that fourth down, you should be forced to use a time out if you do that crap, then his defense took forever to get their slow asses back to the line.

Yeah. This is being talked about in another thread. Total BS. He also subbed players while stalling, this needs to be addressed this off season.

Challenge rules are fine. We know why Harbaugh did what he did, but it is within the rules of the game. There really is no way around that. They don't need to overhaul a system that works fine because once out of every 150 games this happens.

To save that timeout and get their subs the defense can challenge the spot of the ball and say they think it is a first down. The defense is allowed to challenge the spot of the ball. Logically, it wouldn't make sense for them to say a 3rd down was converted, but that doesn't mean they are not allowed to.

Football is the only major sport where you can challenge a decision. Consider ourselves lucky to have this opportunity and let's accept the current limit.

Refs make mistakes and the players make mistakes too, that's the nature of the game, it'll never be perfect.

Some plays are overturned only because we now use slow motion, 4 different angles and a microscope. WTF? Since when is football a game of millimetric precision?

We're gonna ask for mulligans when we f*ck up plays too?
