Default Logan returns to Steelers, is rehabbing injured knee

Although the Pittsburgh Steelers figure to address their safety situation over the weekend, the team has made one more pre-draft move to bolster the position, re-signing veteran Mike Logan, who was released in March for salary cap reasons.

A versatile nine-year veteran who can play both safety spots and is also a standout special teams performer, Logan is rehabilitating from a knee injury suffered in the Steelers' victory over Seattle in Super Bowl XL. He is expected to be fully recovered before the start of training camp.

Pittsburgh lost starting free safety Chris Hope to Tennessee in free agency and signed former Washington starter Ryan Clark, ostensibly to replace him. But the Steelers were still thin at the position and, once the extension to the collective bargaining agreement was approved, increasing the salary cap, there was little doubt they would give Logan the opportunity to re-sign.

His return now gives the Steelers four veterans safeties, a unit led, of course, by Pro Bowl strong safety Troy Polamalu.

The Steelers are expected to add a young safety during the draft, perhaps even with their first-round pick. But getting Logan back provides security at the position.

Logan, 31, is a Pittburgh-area native who played at West Virginia University and entered the league as a second-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1997 draft. He played four seasons in Jacksonville before signing with the Steelers as a free agent in 2001.

His best season was in 2003, when he started 15 games and recorded a career-best 73 tackles. He went to camp the following season as a starter but then suffered a hamstring injury and missed much of the year. For his career, Logan has appeared in 103 games and started 28. He has 269 tackles, five interceptions and 3? sacks.

Contract details were not yet available, but it is believed Logan signed a one-year deal.

I love the way Logan tackles. He hits like a Steeler, which is something Chris Hope seldom did.
