Default Terrible Towel to Fly From New York Landmark if Jets Lose

MANHATTAN ó Itís on.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl are betting big on Sunday's AFC Championship game between the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

If the Jets win, Ravenstahl will place a Jets Fireman helmet on a Pittsburgh landmark. If the Steelers win, Bloomberg will hang a Steelers "Terrible Towel" on a landmark here.

"Peyton, down. Brady, down. Big Ben is next. I have a shiny, new number six Jets jersey picked out and ready for Mayor Ravenstahl," Bloomberg challenged.

"After this game, the only Jet that will be going to Dallas is the one carrying the Steelers," Ravenstahl shot back.

The municipal duo also decided on a feel-good punishment for the losing mayor. While wearing the jersey of the winning team, the mayor will assemble care packages for soldiers from the winning city who have recently returned home from overseas. (Good bet. I like it. - mesa)

In years past, Pittsburgh has had losing mayors in an array of embarrassing get ups, most memorably having one appear in Sports Illustrated magazine in their zoo's penguin exhibit twirling a Terrible Towel.

The two cities had solicited suggestions via Facebook and Twitter, and New Yorkers had some equally creative ideas.

"How about Pitt mayor has to wear a Sanchez. jersey and shovel an NYC sidewalk, vice versa if Pitt wins!" suggested Twitter use P_DUB_40oz.

"If the Jets lose, Rex Ryan should have to give a foot massage to James Harrison and Troy Polamalu," johntandlich said.

Twitter user Bigee79 thought the losing mayor should have to shave his head.

aab412808 went the artistic route.

"Steelers win, Central Park shall again host "The Gates" and be draped w Terrible Towels," he tweeted.

But Mike Dindyal, 27, who works as a security guard at the Foot Locker in Times Square, said he'd settle for some good old fashioned humiliation.

"They should drive to Manhattan and all the Pittsburgh players should wear the Jets jersey," he said.
