Can't imagine a better way for the Steelers to celebrate Myron's birthday than with a victory over the Jets!
May the spirit of Myron emanate from every Terrible Towel at Heinz Field tonight.... Double Yoi! Regards, ClosetSteelerFan |

Happy Birthday to the dear Cope
http://blogs.sites.post-gazette.com/...ld/24622-myron Sunday, January 23, 2011 12:01 AM Written by Dan Gigler ![]() "Yoi! I'm gonna make 'em an offer they can't refuse, mmm-hah!" ... Spotted Saturday in the window of Commonwealth Press, South Side. As has been widely noted this week, by seemingly every single Steelers fan with a Facebook page, today would've been the late, great Myron Cope's 82nd birthday. It's hard not to take this as a good omen for the Steelers. A gift of the cosmos that they would be playing for a chance to advance to the Super Bowl on the birthday of the iconic, adored broadcaster with the funny voice, the gentleman and the jester, an embodiment of Pittsburgh, and the creator of the team's ultimate good luck charm and vexer of opponents: the often imitated, but never duplicated Terrible Towel. Probably the single most recognizable, ubiquitous and synonymous symbol of not only the Steelers, but the City of Pittsburgh as well, the Terrible Towel has done a lot of good, for a lot of people, and Cope and his legacy lives on every time one is waved. But consider this: The Steelers last played on Cope's birthday in 2005. It was the AFC Championship against New England at Heinz Field. And you know what happened on that frigid day. But what no one knew at the time, was that it would end up being Myron's last broadcast for the Steelers. He retired a few months later. So, Myron Cope's last broadcast for the Steelers was a loss. In the AFC Championship game. At home. On his birthday. Feh! As the dear Cope would say. You know this isn't sitting well with him in the afterlife. Somebody with some real pull owes Myron one, and you can bet Cope has his (or her) ear. So, it's easy to imagine him behind the Pearly Gates, sidling up to St. Peter with a smoke, a toddy, and of course, his Terrible Towel in tow, saying "Pete, we got this today, you betcha." Some Myron memories: (See article link for the URLs - mesa) * Chico Harlan's excellent Myron Cope takeout, the last major piece written on the man. * Robert Dvorchak's paean to Cope upon his retirement * Bob Smizik's column from Cope's retirement press conference * Myron's in-game retirement celebration, by Bob Dvorchak * Gene Collier's obit of Cope * Cope's own epitaph? Creator of Towel dead. * Double Joy: Myron Cope and the Pittsburgh Sound * Myron's favorite Three Rivers Stadium memories. * Cope on the 30th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception. * Smizik on Cope's first book, about him as a great (written) wordsmith. |
