Default Duquesne

Hey guys,

Really not sure where to put this, so please any mods please feel free to move this if necessary. Anyways...I just got into the University of Duquesne. This is all well and great, problem is I live a good 10 hours away, and I would be leaving all of my friends and everyone I know behind. My family is originally from Pittsburgh, so this is one hell of a tough decision for me.

I'm looking for some input from those of you that have been there, go there, or know quite a bit about the campus, faculty, students, and all that good stuff. Please be honest, I'm not looking for a bunch of pat on the backs and atta boys. Tell me what you think about this school and why. This is the biggest decision of my life, and I need help!!!

Thanks so much everyone

I've never gone to Duquesne, but have heard nothing but good things about the academics there...so if nothing else, that's a definite plus.

Now on to what I do know lol. The location is great with it being right next to Oakland and the Southside (for when you want to go out at nights). They're both within walking/short bus ride distance. The students are your typical college students...mostly friendly and fun, but of course not w/o it's dickheads lol. I've partied with people from Duquesne, always a good time. And you'll mingle a lot with Pitt, Carnegie, Robert Morris and AIP students as well. The area is a hot bed for college kids.

I know they have expanded to the downtown area as well (near the Consol Energy Center on Fifth and Forbes), which is much more business-y, but is still close to just about everything (especially the Strip District, which is a fun area as well). Everything in Pittsburgh is pretty close though, the city really isn't that big. No matter where you are, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting to where you want to go in a decent amount of time (unless it's rush hour).

The only real downside is East Oakland and Hill district. They are not the best neighborhoods by any means. And while Pittsburgh is a relatively safe city, I wouldn't go out on any ventures by yourself at 2 in the morning, if you catch my drift.

Others who have gone there might know a bit more about the classes and faculty, but all in all it's a really good school.

Congrats on getting accepted! What are you planning on majoring in?

Oh, and just think (with you being a Pens fan), you'll get awesome student rush discounts on Pens games!

They aren't as cheap as they used to be (it was $5 for a while when they sucked in the early '00s), but they are still an extremely good deal.

That's what makes it so difficult. I can either stay close to home and be with friends and go to a cheaper college, or go to Duquesne as a stranger and be able to go to all these sporting events. I know Pittsburgh fairly well, I've been there many times, but living there is certainly a different animal than just visiting. There would be some struggles.

You will make new friends. Heck the odds are pretty good that the friends you have now will be nothing more than memories in 20 years. I know it's hard to imagine, but it happens more often than not.

You gotta do what's right for you. You can still keep in contact with old friends, and as platypus said, you'll make tons of new ones.

Concentrate on which is the better school for you and worry about the friend situation later. Sometimes making what seems like the harder decision is better for you than staying where you feel safe and comfortable. Life isn't always going to be safe and comfortable.
