He is actually from Pittsburgh! Josh Gibson hit an astounding 962 HR in his carrer playing for the Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords. While it was Negro League competition 962 is 962. Here is a great article about him. Link

One thing you can say about the Pirates is they do at least recognize the great Negro League teams of the city. They even gave out a Gibson bobblehead a few years ago, there were two versions, a Grays and a Crawfords. I have the Crawfords one. I really like when they wear the old uniforms for a game.

The Black Babe Ruth man what a hitter he had 962 home runs throughout his 17 year career if only he did not have that nervous breakdown and let the drinking get to him just think what he would have done.

You know, comparitively, this is still a pretty legitimate record. Although black players were only allowed to play with other black players, white players were also playing "watered down" baseball, since it was exclusively a white man's game. When you consider that the pitching is also watered down nowadays because of so much specialization (Pitchers used to pitch...there weren't "starters, set-up men, and closers", there were just pitchers), and so many teams, it lends even more credibility to the record.
