Ernie Stautner's #70 is the only officially retired number. However, the Steelers no longer issue the following numbers, which are in essence retired as well:

- 12 (Terry Bradshaw)
- 32 (Franco Harris)
- 47 (Mel Blount, see below)
- 52 (Mike Webster)
- 58 (Jack Lambert)
- 59 (Jack Ham, see below)
- 63 (Dermontti Dawson)
- 75 (Joe Greene)

Note: No. 47 has been issued during the preseason regularly, and on some occasions to the final 53-man roster. Used five times officially since Mel Blount's retirement, most recently to practice squad member Ronald Stanley in 2005.

Note: After Jack Ham retired, no. 59 was used once in 1984 by Todd Seabaugh, who played one season with the team. According to legend, the equipment manager?who assigns jersey numbers to new players?later stripped Seabaugh of the number because the player "wasn't Jack Ham". The number hasn't been used since.

I don't think the Steelers really have any retired numbers.I think Bradshaw's #12 might be retired, but I don't think there are any others, just ones that don't get handed out.I know when Bettis came to Pittsburgh we offered him Franco's #32.

If the guy is one of our HoFers,I don't think we hand out the number.

I know we will NEVER see these numbers handed out:

12
88
32 (Bettis will be the ONLY one,and he turned it down)
75
58

You can probably add 36 to that list as I heard somewhere that they probably won't dish out that number anytime soon...

With all the Steelers in the HoF, they may need to issue 3 digit numbers!
