Default Red Shirt

Just curious what everyone would think of a red shirt type rule in the NFL, like in college? With all the talk of Kellen Winslow, and we had our own medical problems with K.Bell. Should the NFL, let teams red shirt players for injuries when the majority of the season is lost? It just feels like we never got enough out of Kendrell Bell, that he still owed us. Maybe teams should be able to extend contract out to make up for time lost. I know this will never happen but thought I would throw it out there. For another example the brownies are looking at two years , last and this year without Winslow, then he onluy has two years left on contract. Just doesn`t fear. I know if you order something from a company and you only get half the goods, then you get a backorder.

Unfortunately, the amount of money these players make, and the way contracts are written these days, with injury clauses in them, players are the ones losing out on all the cash..the teams themselves have thier asses covered by contract clauses that say they dont have to pay out money if the player is injured for a certain number of games per year, etc.

It's not a bad idea, to have a red shirt like u mentioned, but also as you mentioned, it most likely will never happen.. for ever kendrell bell, kellen winslow, ki jana carter.. there are 20 other players who go thru season after season w/ out major injury.

Good thinking cleve !!! :D

to clarify before opinion, are you saying that to redshirt Winslow, his full contract would start once he was healthy? or since you only got 2 years left you only pay half as much?

Since there is money involved, unlike in college, u could probably do it either way, or a combination of the 2. Since he already got his signing bonus, it would probably be easier to work w/ whats left on his deal.

Bad idea. With money involved it wont bode well. And after all, the NFL is way better then ollger, if anything they should change their rules to replicate the NFL :D

It wouldn't work.Colleges redshirt players so they can develop for a year and get bigger, msot players coming out of HS aren't big enough for college football.

But when they get out of college, that's about as big as they will get, without eating to get bigger.

It's also a way to get a player another year of eligability.
