Default Team Report: Inside Slant

After passing up a chance to get the kind of big back they've long ridden to success and instead polishing their receiving game, the Steelers suddenly look like an offense in transition.

The team that ran the ball more than any other in the NFL each of the past two seasons struck for more supremacy in the air by drafting Ohio State wide receiver Santonio Holmes in the first round and Florida State wide receiver Willie Reid in the third.

Coach Bill Cowher insists his offense won't change, but those aren't the signals his actions are sent out.

"We aren't going to get away from running the football," Cowher promised. "We aren't changing our approach to the game."

Both Cowher and his offensive coordinator, Ken Whisenhunt, noted that they had to get more help in the passing game for their young quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger.

"I think with the quarterback that we have, the ability to put some weapons around him is important," Cowher said.

Whisenhunt added that Roethlisberger earned more opportunities to throw by his performance in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh had the chance to replace the retired Jerome Bettis by drafting USC's LenDale White at the end of the first round. After passing on him, the Falcons offered them T.J. Duckett; the Steelers were interested, but only for a fifth-rounder, not the third-rounder Atlanta wanted in 2007.

Now the Steelers' offense looks more like it's built for the old Run-and-Shoot with smaller, fast and quick receivers (Hines Ward is the tallest among the top four at 6 feet), with a fast and quick back in Willie Parker and a quarterback who loves to throw on the run.

"I think you have to give Ben an opportunity to get a guy that can stretch the field," Cowher said. "We have some guys now with Heath (Miller) being able to occupy the middle. Hines, you know what he's been able to do. Cedrick has been able to do that as well. I don't know if you can do enough of that."

It does not take a Sherlock Holmes - rather, a Santonio Holmes -- to figure out the Steelers loaded up for the pass.

"There is a possibility that we can throw the ball a lot more by the draft picks," Holmes said.

"Things happened at Ohio State the same way, we had always been a running team. After a while, we started getting some of the better athletes at wide receiver to come into Ohio State and Coach (Jim) Tressel saw that and decided to open up our offense a lot more and give us the opportunity to make more plays. Hopefully, the same thing can happen here at Pittsburgh."

Enough said here, I agree with Cowher he hasn`t ghad these kind of oppurtunities in a long time.

i dont see the bill going away from his run first attitude. we have ben but he's really not used to throwing the ball more then 20 times a game. and unfortunetly when he has had to throw the ball more then 20 times a game. I havent had the best outlook on fast willie but maybe it is possible that we have a new running game we havent seen.

I still would love to see a big power back to run people over because for me that is the most fun to watch is a great bruttle run that just pushes defenders to their asses but I have faith in what they are plannin and think this could do well for us.

The key to any great offense isnt one particular aspect....... it's balance.

Balance is the key to any great offense and adding weapons for Ben to throw to will only make our running game and our overall offensive attack better.

I have said it before on this site..... We should have a top 4 or 5 offense in the AFC theis season....

Look people Ben is 27-4 (including the postseason) in his first two seasons.... that didnt happen on accident... he is for real and this team is for real.

We will be in the postseason again this season.... but if last year taught us anything it is that in the playoffs absoutely anything can happen.

During the postseason in 05-06 we saw for the first time in a long time a steelers offense with real balance.... lets hope we see more of that in 06-07

I still want to see us running the ball more than throwing. A few years ago they went pass heavy and it got us to 6 and 10. Screw that.

Yes ben is 27-4 but not many of those games were won because of Bens arm or because he took over the game. He is getting better it seems with his knowledge and where everyone is at on the field... but i still think we are loaded at RB even though we minus Bettis from the equation. Parker, Staley, Haynes , Humes is not a bad line-up at all and i think that we will still see us running more than passing. We just may take a few more shots down the field and surely IF HOLMES and REID make us a better WR core than last year.. it will allow us more first downs which means more running plays. I still think our running game will be around 60 percent.

I think Bill would ideally like the Steelers to look like the Cowboys of the mid 90's (without the glist and the drugs). Strong running with a punishing passing attack if you try to stop the run.

Maybe. That's what we did in last years playoffs and it worked well. When the D tried to stop our run we passed for big yards and shocked everyone. On paper right now we have a pretty strong runnin game and we also have a strong passin game. This can be used to shock most teams we play into not knowin what we are gonna do next. We have a reputation to run the ball, but now we can pass. Add in the next player groomed to be an ARE replacement and the D won't know what hit them.

The point i want to prove about the 6-10 pass heavy year is that tommy turnover was our qb. However i think the old quote pass to score run to win is a very true statement.
