Default You're the GM, what do you do?

Here is what I would try, on offense

Let's pretend, for our purposes here, that there won't
be a lock out (which we know there probably will be). The
reason it doesn't really matter is because it is not the Steeler
way to sign many FAs to begin with - and certainly they don't
sign any top $ guys, period. That being said, there are a few
considerations I make as GM.

QB - no FA QB makes sense. Actually, I would like to upgrade
our #2 from Leftwich, who is he beyond limited. And Batch has
got to retire - become our QB coach. Dixon, once promising,
clearly displayed he isn't anywhere close to being a legit NFL
QB - at least not in 2010. All that said, they will stick with Ben,
BL and Dixon. No reason to draft QB either.

RB - With Frank the Tank gone, Moore as a FA, it actually leaves
us a little thin at RB. PLUS, I would add a FB as well and end
the moronic H-back BS of Arians. We basically have Mendenhall,
Redman and Dwyer. I am still high on Dwyer, as long as they
keep the coaching on him and keep him in shape. I believe he
has a huge upside and if RM gets hurt, we will find out what
a good back he is. Redman is limited but good at short yardage -
no way an every down back. I'd look at Snelling or Evans for FA
FB or a few of the draft picks mentioned. We can probably get a
late pick RB or an undrafted free agent for another camp body
and depth, and in case on of our 3 HBs go down. I would, between
FA and the draft, add 1 FB and 1 HB. I would like an upgrade over
Moore, who seemed better in 2009 compared to 2010, where he
stopped getting those first downs for whatever reason.

WR - We got Ward, who has 1 more year left, Wallace, Sanders,
Brown, El. We could use some size here. (I am NOT going to assume
Sweed is a likely possibility here.) I don't see any FAs that jump out
at me. But I do like Courtney Smith who could be grabbed in the 5th
or 6th round. He is big, strong, fast, from a small school.

He could really be a nice addition and give us the size we are lacking
while allowing us to address our bigger needs (CB, OL, DL) with
earlier picks.

TE - Can we please end the Spaeth experiment. He has had his chances
and mostly blows the opportunities he gets. He had the game-winning catch
in his hand and just blew it. Yea, he is super tall, and he also can't catch.
We need to draft an upgrade here. Someone like Kyle Adams could be had
for a 7th or undrafted FA and give us an upgrade. At least let him see if
he can beat out Spaeth in camp. I am sick of seeing Spaeth offer nothing.

OT - They won't pursue any FA OTs. Not unless we lose even more
bodies than we gain back in camp. (That can't happen, can it?) But
I do see going fairly early in the draft for an OT - or at least I pray to
God they do. We might have to move up to get him, but Nate Solder would
be a nice pick up. Might not be ready to start year 1 but we might not need
him to. He has off the chart athletic ability and a frame to easily add
muscle to, while he is already pretty strong in the weight room.

OG/C - No FA will be added. Some think it might make sense to take
Pouncy's brother. Maybe not the worst idea, but generally using a first
rounder on an OG not the best idea, although there are exceptions. Personally
I feel we can move Colon to RG and he will do fine. Get 1 more year
from Hotel, Kemo good enough at LG. I would prefer they invest in a legit
OT more than anything. Half the guys we play there are playing out of
position. Give me a legit OT for once!

Spaeth proved himself not to be the go to guy. None of us really think Sweed is the answer. However, we do have a guy that could become the red-zone guy: Wes Lyons. At 6'8" and 230lbs, this guy could become quickly irreplaceable. We really need to focus the draft on OL, CB, and DL.

Wes Lyons will never make the team. he did nothing in college and will do nothing in the NFL.

I agree with everything except Lyons being anyone we can remotely
count on to fill in the WR role. He was grossly unproductive at WVU.
Even with every possible excuse (team was run-oriented, then
switched to new offense, etc.) it still cannot excuse the near
zero productivity, especially in TD catches.

This guy won't even make the roster. If he does, I will be pleasantly
surprised. If it does, it would probably indicate he had some major
problems (substance abuse, et al) that he has now over come.

I have nothing against "giving him a shot." I'm just not going to hold
my breath counting on him at all. There is a reason he was so
unproductive on the previous level. There are many, many players
who have the physical skills to be a football player, but just aren't
a "football player." You can be tall, big, fast and strong, but just not
have the knack for being a football player. If not, there would be
tons of track stars filling every football roster in the league.

This guy caught 42 passes his entire career at WVU. He then was though so highly by all 32 NFL teams that he didn't get drafted at all or even offered a FA rookie contract. He didn't play football last year at all in the NFL.
I think he's replaceable. Could we strike gold, I hope so. But these type projects are probably 5-10% chance of paying off.

Exactly. I not against turning over every stone they can, but the odds
are this kid won't even make it through a single cut. Hope he is the
exception.

The first thing I would do is join this board to figure out my next move.
