Steelers won't place transition tag on CB Taylor

The Pittsburgh Steelers will not use the transition tag on cornerback Ike Taylor, according to a league source Thursday.

There had been reports and speculation that the team would do so, but that will not be the case. The Steelers plan to be competitive in retaining Taylor and tackle Willie Colon, who missed the entire season due to a torn Achilles' tendon, but are waiting until they see the new CBA before entering into negotiations.

Taylor is a six-year starter who would be one of the top free agents at his position.
He revealed during the week leading up to Super Bowl XLV that he and the Steelers were discussing a new contract.

"There have been conversations," Taylor said in Fort Worth, Texas. "I've talked with a few people in this organization about remaining here. They know I want to retire as a Steeler."

The Steelers used the franchise tag on outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley, and Woodley on Wednesday signed the tender, which was worth slightly more than $10 million.

Last year, the team utilized both the franchise and transition tag initially, then worked out a long-term deal with franchise defensive tackle Casey Hampton.

Steelers have preliminary talk with Taylor

The Steelers have had preliminary discussions with cornerback Ike Taylor about a new contract that would prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent, director of football operations Kevin Colbert said today.

The Steelers have until 4 p.m. today to put the transition tag on Taylor that would pay him the average of the top 10 cornerbacks in the NFL, or $11,817,000, in 2011. But it is unlikely they will do so.

After getting outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley to sign a franchise tender that would pay him the average of the top five linebackers in the league, the Steelers have turned their attention to re-sign Taylor, their best cornerback. Taylor will be 31 in May.

"We're really approaching this one guy at a time," Colbert said.

The Champ Bailey deal potentially inflated the transition tag price from what it was a few days ago

If the Steelers are approaching this one player at a time sounds like Colon can either walk or wait

definitely.

champs deal is a little under 11 mil/year. i didnt realize the transition was so high. last year the franchise (top 5 players) value for CB's was $10 mil. this year it has jumped to $14.

the ripple effects of al davis bonehead deal to namdi and the subsequent dealings with revis are finally coming home to roost.

pat kirwan has a good article that if p. manning signs his franchise tag, how it can bring teams to their knees in the next few years.
