Default Colbert makes up for lost time preparing for draft

Colbert makes up for lost time preparing for draft

INDIANAPOLIS The hangover that came with experiencing his first Super Bowl loss in three tries didn't last long for Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert.

He simply had too much work to catch up on the length of the Steelers' season sidetracked Colbert from preparations for the 2011 NFL draft.

"Monday, the day after, was abysmal for everybody," Colbert said of the Steelers' loss to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV. "But you can't dwell on it, especially when you enter this phase of the year."

Three days after the Super Bowl, Colbert was leading a draft meeting that included all of the Steelers' scouts at the team's South Side headquarters.

"You're behind, so we have to make up for lost time," Colbert said, "and quite honestly I'm glad we had to make up for lost time because it took your mind off (the loss)."

The Steelers were among the teams that interviewed Penn State guard/center Stefen Wisniewski on Wednesday night at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The Steelers see Wisniewski as more of a center in the NFL, and they are set at the position with Maurkice Pouncey. But the Pittsburgh Central Catholic graduate insists he can play any of the interior line positions at the next level.

"I really believe I can play both," Wisniewski said of guard or center. "It depends on which team picks me."

Wisniewski would love nothing more than for the Oakland Raiders to be that team.

His uncle, Steve, is an offensive line coach for the Raiders.

"I couldn't think of a better guy to work for," Wisniewski said.

The Steelers have the 31st pick in the first round of the draft, and Colbert said they have only ruled out one position, aside from specialists. That is quarterback, where the Steelers have Ben Roethlisberger and are planning to bring back backups Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon.

First: Thank you Mesa for bringing these stories day after day!

I really like each of our backups, but having 4 QBs is not really efficient (unless your starter is suspended for the beginning of the season). It takes up a valuable roster spot. Do we really think all 4 will be on the squad at the beginning of the regular season? If not, who gets cut?
