Default Barber could sign with Steelers

Barber could sign with Steelers

EXCLUSIVE

A surprise team with no ties to Tiki Barber has emerged as a possible landing spot for the soon-to-be no-longer-retired running back who is attempting to defy the odds with a comeback after missing four full NFL seasons.

There could be something down the line with Barber and the Steelers, according to two sources who stated that Barber would certainly be interested in restarting his career in Pittsburgh, playing for a player-friendly head coach in Mike Tomlin and a franchise that annually is a Super Bowl contender. (Must be the same "sources" that said Dick LeBeau was going to the Arizona Turdnials as DC. - mesa)

The Giants cannot officially remove Barber from their reserve/retired list until there is a new collective bargaining agreement. The Giants, though, are not going to impede Barber's attempt to find a new team and are likely to give permission to Barber and his agent, Mark Lepselter, to start the process of drumming up interest -- without any tampering fears by other teams -- while the CBA negotiations are ongoing.

Asked if he has had any negotiations with the Steelers, Lepselter yesterday told The Post that would be "factually incorrect" and added he has not spoken to any teams about Barber.

Lepselter said, "We remain confident" there will be interest in Barber, who has been working out for more than two weeks, turns 36 next month and hasn't played in the NFL since 2006.

"Tiki wishes the Giants the best and they have wished him the same," Lepselter said. "In light of the fact that they will not be retaining his rights, and have stated such publically, we are hoping that we can begin speaking with other teams as soon as possible." Though they have a dynamic quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers love to run the ball and at running back have Rashard Mendenhall as the starter and Mewelde Moore and Isaac Redman in reserve. Barber is not expecting a full-time role with a new team.

It was another day in the gym for Barber, who yesterday morning arrived at Carini's House of Iron in Pine Brook, N.J., accompanied by his girlfriend, Traci Johnson, and two small dogs. -- Perry Chiaramonte contributed to this story.

(Why would the Steelers would be interested in an ancient and expensive running back? - mesa)

I doubt that they are...and it would be a huge mistake if they even thought about it for a second.

Dude's washed up and just looking for a payday.

Agree. He should try for the Redskins or the Cardinals since they are known for making stupid player personnel decisions.

I wouldn't be surprised if Skeletor, I mean Al Davis, gave him a shot either.

What's behind Tiki's long-shot comeback? Pay day

Sorry, but I don't believe Tiki Barber is coming out of retirement because he misses the game, wants to play with his twin brother or has unfinished business to complete. Nope, I believe he's coming out of retirement for something more basic.

Something like money.

It's no secret that Barber is going through a messy and expensive divorce and will have payments to make on four children -- including 10-month-old twins. It's also no secret that a once promising career in broadcasting has gone south, with NBC bailing on someone it once considered a rising star.

Put the two together, and what do you have? Right. Someone who needs to start cashing checks.

Now, let's make something clear: It's not as if Barber is destitute. He made plenty of money while starring for the New York Giants, and he was doing OK as an aspiring reporter for NBC. But that was four years ago, and in four years a lot has changed with Barber -- notably, his reputation.

Once considered one of the most popular and articulate of New York's sports celebrities, Barber has fallen so far so fast that when former Giants were honored last season during the team's Ring of Honor ceremony he was booed. Fans remembered his criticisms of coach Tom Coughlin. They remembered his criticisms of quarterback Eli Manning. And they probably remembered his personal travails, with news of Barber's relationship with a former NBC intern breaking while his then-wife, Ginny, was pregnant with twins.

What they didn't remember was that he was one of the best and most reliable backs in Giants history, saving Coughlin's job when the Giants absolutely, positively had to win the 2006 season finale. All Barber did that evening was run for a franchise-record 234 yards and score three times -- including two runs of 50 or more yards each -- as the Giants qualified for the playoffs.

That was the last time we saw him on the football field, with Barber retiring after the Giants' 23-20 playoff loss to Philadelphia. He left too soon, but give the guy credit -- he left while he was on top, and his body was intact.

Now, of course, he wants to come back because he says that seeing his twin brother Ronde excel in Tampa Bay "reignited the fire," but I'm not buying it. I'm sure that Barber misses the game, but I'm also sure he misses the game's checks more, and players with Barber's experience make a minimum of $820,000 annually under the current collective bargaining agreement.

Look, Tiki Barber knows what you and I know, which is that 36-year-old running backs out of football for four years have little or no shot at making an impact in the NFL. I know Marcus Allen ran for 830 yards at 36, but he wasn't shaking off four years of rust. And while people contend that Barber has been working out and is in marvelous condition, he also turns 36 next month, hasn't taken a hit since the 2006 season and didn't exactly enamor himself to his former team when he was playing.

In fact, the Giants couldn't respond quickly enough after Barber announced his plans, saying they would relinquish his rights the moment there's a new CBA.

Barber's agent contends there are "interested parties" waiting on the former star running back, and I'm sure there are. But there were "interested parties" waiting on defensive end Andre Wadsworth, too, after he missed five seasons. He was 32 then, and he was in great shape, too. And he didn't make it.

I don't know what the future holds for Tiki Barber, but I do know there are diminishing returns for the game's top backs once they hit 30. Of course, Barber doesn't have to be a top back. He just has to be good enough to be useful to someone, and maybe, just maybe, he can be effective as a third-down specialist -- provided he has some of the juice left from 2006.

But that was a long time ago, and call me skeptical. Third-down backs have bursts or explosion to make defenders miss, and Tiki Barber didn't get faster or quicker with age.

"There's absolutely no market for him," said one general manager, "so you have to ask yourself what this is all about. The guy left football before he was ready. He had a broadcasting career that went down the drain. He screwed up his marriage. He lost money. He misses the fame and glory. He's fallen from grace.

"So he looked around, found the NFL and said, 'Why not give it a go?' And my response would be: 'Right. So give it a go in Canada or the Arena League for a year, and we'll see what you have left.' This is sad. If I had Tiki Barber and Herschel Walker standing in front of me right now, I'd take Herschel."

Nevertheless, all it takes is one team to give him a shot, and the smart money is on Tampa Bay. Barber always has wanted to play alongside his brother, with the two being extraordinarily close, and the Bucs could use another veteran to help mentor LeGarrette Blount.

It makes too much sense not to happen. I mean, Barber was an impact player when he was last on the field, and it never hurts to have Ronde Barber in your corner in Tampa Bay. That I get. What I don't understand is why we're trying to figure out why Barber would want to return to pro football at an age when most guys are moving on with their next career. So try this: Because Tiki Barber doesn't have a next career.

When he played he always struck me as someone who was sharp, confident and equipped to achieve more after he left pro football. And he tried. But he failed. So now he's going back to what he does best because, in the end, maybe being a football player is who Tiki Barber is. Nothing more. Nothing less. Just a player who needs the checks to pay the mortgage and the alimony.

And that's OK. But let's just be honest about it.
