New North Shore street to be named after Noll

Pittsburgh Stadium Authority officials plan to vote Monday on a key piece of funding needed to build a North Shore street named after Steelers Hall-of-Fame coach Chuck Noll.

Chuck Noll Way would connect North Shore Drive and West General Robinson Street, cutting through what is now a parking lot east of Heinz Field.

It would be roughly the length of a city block and run in front of Stage AE, an indoor-outdoor concert hall that opened in December. The Steelers teamed with Columbus-based developer Continental Real Estate Cos. to build the $12 million entertainment venue with help from a $2.5 million state grant.

The Stadium Authority is scheduled to vote on authorizing the use of $882,000 in federal aid. PennDOT would perform the work. The total cost of the construction will be $988,000, said Mary Conturo, executive director of the authority.

Noll coached the Steelers from 1969 to 1991, a span that included four Super Bowl victories. Among the other sports-themed names on the North Shore are Art Rooney Avenue, Mazeroski Way and the Roberto Clemente Bridge.

Glad to read something will be named after Coach Noll, but spending $3.382 million in tax dollars to subsidize the construction of an "entertainment venue" and the road to run in front of it?

No wonder the country is broke
