Default Steeler Rapid Reports on various players

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/PIT

April 05, 2011 6:47 p.m. - WR Emmanuel Sanders had what he described as a "second and final foot surgery" on his broken left foot. His recuperation schedule will be a month or more. He posted his biggest concern on Facebook: How WR Antwaan Randle El merited a "Dancing With the Stars" invite to watch Hines Ward and he didn't. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:44 p.m. - Roster review: DE Ziggy Hood -- Most Improved Player runner-up behind James Farrior, if there were such a team award. When Aaron Smith had surgery, this 32nd-overall pick from 2009 capably stepped in and filled the void. Nine starts, 20 tackles and three sacks don't begin to explain his contributions to this 3-4 defense. Grade: A-. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:42 p.m. - Roster review: NT Chris Hoke -- He has been a staple as Casey Hampton's backup and an extra DE in the past seven years, covering 108 games, 80 tackles and 17 spot starts. But the 10-year veteran is a free agent and is considered expendable on a 30-something defensive line that needs to get younger. Grade: B+. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:37 p.m. - Roster review: OT Tony Hills -- He dressed and played sparingly in four games in 2010, the first action he has seen in three NFL seasons. The Steelers had a battered, patchwork line that used six different starting combinations last season. They may select a couple of OTs in this draft, and that could send Hills packing. Grade: D. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:36 p.m. - Roster review: DB Tuff Harris -- This is a guy who has been on and off the practice squads and rosters of five different teams the past four years, the Steelers included. The special-teamer last played in the NFL in 2008, with six games for Tennessee. The Steelers and a Tuff on defense? Sounds like a match. Grade: Incomplete. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:30 p.m. - Roster review: DE Ra'Shon "Sunny" Harris -- Second-year player who the Steelers lost to Carolina and then regained in 2009. He played in his first two Steelers games in 2010 and made two tackles. This, amid injuries to both starting DEs. Coaches like him, but early-round big bodies may endanger his job security. Grade: Incomplete. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:18 p.m. - Roster review: OLB James Harrison -- He had a third consecutive year of 10-plus sacks, set career highs for passes defended (five) and interceptions (two) and topped the league with $100,000 in fines. All this, and he played hurt; after the season, he had two back surgeries. Imagine his numbers when healthy. Grade: A-. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:16 p.m. - Roster review: The H's. NT Casey Hampton -- This 10-year veteran had only 20 tackles in 2010, the second fewest of his career and his fewest in the past six seasons. Still, it was a good year for him. The ample Hampton spent more time on the field than in recent years and helped the NFL's No. 1 defense greatly. The Steelers need more of the same. Grade: A-. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 6:11 p.m. - CBs and OTs have been the oft-discussed draft possibilities, but what if the Steelers expended a first-round pick on a big body for their aging defensive line? A Pittsburgh Post-Gazette blog suggested that DT Phil Taylor of Baylor, the No. 29-rated player on NFLDraftScout.com's board, could come to the Steelers at No. 31. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 1:30 p.m. - Cliff Forrest, 10, of suburban Pittsburgh, bought with his $8,500 in college savings the Super Bowl XX ring that once belonged to famed Bears defensive lineman William “Refrigerator” Perry. The boy told the Chicago Sun-Times he figured Perry– who suffers from Guillan-Barre syndrome – would want it back. So the Forrests flew to Chicago and returned it Saturday. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 12:21 p.m. - Roster review: WR Tyler Grisham -- This 2009 free-agent from Clemson was activated for four games that season, but due to draft and the rise of Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown, never got into a 2010 game. It’s odd to say about a possession receiver who never dropped a practice pass the season before last, but... Grade: Incomplete. Steelers RapidReports

April 05, 2011 12:20 p.m. - Roster review: The G’s. CB William Gay – The byproduct of the draft-day 2010 trade for CB Bryant McFadden was the ability to return Gay to nickel back, where he played solidly. Good tackler, but still needs to improve coverage. What would a Steelers investment in early-draft CBs do to Gay’s situation? Grade: B. Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 5:28 p.m. - Since selecting USC’s Mike Taylor 10th overall in 1968, the Steelers have picked just two OTs in the first round over their past 42 drafts. They came with mixed results: Jamain Stephens in 1996 (10 starts in three seasons before being jettisoned) and Leon Searcy in 1992 (48 starts in four seasons before exiting via free agency). Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 5:28 p.m. - First-round OTs are rare for the Steelers, with two of a scant total of six offensive linemen taken at the top of their past 42 drafts. Historically, the Steelers under Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin went No. 1 for defense or skill positions: seven DBs, DL and WRs; five RBs; four TEs; and three QBs and LBs. Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 5:21 p.m. - Three of four NFL.com mock drafters late last week predicted OTs going to the Steelers in the first round -- two with Derek Sherrod of Mississippi State and one with Baylor’s Danny Watkins. CBSSports.com’s Rob Rang on Monday forecast CB Aaron Williams of Texas, and Chad Reuter picked Ohio State DE Cameron Heyward at No. 31 overall. Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 2:35 p.m. - Roster review: LB Keyaron Fox – His critical personal-foul penalty on a kickoff late in Super Bowl XLV was one of a few ill-advised infractions by the special-teams captain last season. He can play inside and outside linebacker, but will free agency and those flags push him outside the organization? Grade: C-. Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 2:32 p.m. - Roster review: OG Ramon Foster – This college OT made the free-agent transition to OG in 2009 and wound up starting eight of 12 regular-season games while healthy last season. Not a stunning performer, but workmanlike. He could improve. Or he could battle someone new (converted free-agent OT Willie Colon?) for starting right guard. Grade: C+. Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 2:31 p.m. - Roster review: ILB Larry Foote – He returned as a free-agent after a year in Detroit (exile?) knowing he could well become a Steelers backup. And this was a guy with 94 consecutive NFL starts. Lawrence Timmons had a breakout season, James Farrior stayed healthy and superb, so reserve Foote simply provided 21 tackles and veteran leadership. Grade: B+. Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 2:29 p.m. - Roster review: The F’s. ILB James Farrior – Unsung Hero and Most Improved Player, if the Steelers gave out such awards. Just when it appeared he was losing a step, just when the Steelers signed back ILB Larry Foote, Farrior admittedly worked harder and turned in a stellar season – at age 36. His six sacks were a career high. Grade: A+ Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 9:34 a.m. - More on the Gary Glick/1956 draft: In addition to that bonus-lottery No. 1 pick (a league initiative 1947-58), the Steelers expended the 5th-overall selection on Mississippi State RB Art Davis. He hurt his knee and never played beyond a 6-yard rookie year. Still on the board was Penn State’s Lenny Moore, an eventual Hall of Famer with Baltimore. Steelers RapidReports

April 04, 2011 9:23 a.m. - Given the lofty status of LSU’s Patrick Peterson, pause to remember the last CB selected No. 1 overall: Colorado State’s Gary Glick in 1956 with the bonus pick. The most use the Steelers got from him was field-goal kicking. Glick had four interceptions in 34 Steelers games, 10 in 37 games with Redskins, Colts and Chargers. He played CB, S, RB and K. Steelers RapidReports

April 01, 2011 6:57 p.m. - LB LaMarr Woodley posted on his Facebook late Friday afternoon: "I thought you all should hear it from me first that I'm . . . signing a long-term contract with the Baltimore Ravens. (It was) too good to turn down, and it's what's best for me and my family. . . . Thank you, and April Fool's! LOL." Steelers RapidReports

April 01, 2011 6:39 p.m. - April Fool's edition: Steelers draftees who went on to fame elsewhere -- QB John Unitas in 1955 (Baltimore), QB Len Dawson fifth-overall in 1957 (Kansas City), QB Bill Nelson in 1963 (Cleveland), RB Emerson Boozer in 1966 (New York Jets) and TE Brent Jones in 1986 (San Francisco).
