Default Bennett wants Romo, Kitna to compete for QB job

Bennett wants Romo, Kitna to compete for QB job
By Jon Machota

Tony Romo is the franchise quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. That has been his job title for the past five seasons. During three of those campaigns he made the Pro Bowl.

However, one of the Cowboys’ tight ends believes Romo, who will turn 31 later this month, should have competition for the starting QB job when NFL play resumes.

Speaking Tuesday on KESN-FM 103.3 in Dallas, Martellus Bennett said Jon Kitna, the team’s backup and eventual starter last year after Romo was injured, should get a shot at being the team’s full-time starter.

"Kitna is one of my favorite people to play with,” Bennett said. “Just being out there on the field with that guy just makes you play even harder. He made some things happen in limited time, so I think if he got a longer chance, he'd be able to do more.

"I hope there's a chance for a quarterback competition this year. Every position, I think we need to put more competition into it."

Kitna, 38, helped the Cowboys win four of their final nine games last season after Romo’s season was ended because of a broken collarbone. Romo opened the season by going 1-5 in his starts.

"We feel good about where we are at quarterback, about the depth with how Kitna played at the end of last year and of course what we think of Tony Romo,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last month when asked about the possibility of the team selecting a quarterback in this month’s draft.

Kitna has been in the league since 1997 and has played for Seattle, Cincinnati and Detroit before joining the Cowboys.

In 2006 and 2007 with the Lions, Kitna had consecutive 4,000-yard passing seasons while working under offensive coordinator Mike Martz.
