Gerry: Would Steelers take Pouncey's brother?

One of the good things about the NFL draft is that it will take everyone’s attention away from the labor issues and put it back where it belongs – on the game and who might be playing it.

So let me just say this about the draft, if for no other reason that to get away from all the labor nonsense:

I don’t think the Steelers will trade up in the first round, especially if they think they want a cornerback, because there are probably enough good ones who will be around when the Steelers pick at No. 31. Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin think there is enough depth and quality in this draft to be able to get a good corner near the bottom of the round.

Ideally, the team likes bigger, more physical corners who can stop the run – a prerequisite in Dick LeBeau’s defense. And, after the level at which they play all these years, it’s hard to argue with LeBeau’s approach.

But, after what happened in the Super Bowl, there is a need for a corner who can run and cover, someone like Aaron Williams of Texas, and I think that should be their focus.

Here’s one other thing to keep in mind: The Steelers love Maurkice Pouncey’s brother, Mike, and wouldn’t hesitate to pick him if he were somehow still available. Mike Pouncey is a center who played guard most of his career at Florida, and he probably considered the best interior lineman in the draft. He would fit perfectly at right guard in the Steelers offense.

But the Steelers don’t think he will be around when it comes time for them to select. Would they be willing to trade up to get him? I doubt it, but I wouldn’t complain.

There are pros and cons to that. As the team knows what they are doing. As it would be a longshot to get Mike Pouncey. But the team needs every help that they can get. Super Bowl contenders or not. They need all the help that they can get. As all teams have issues at every position from the QB to the Special Teams! So despite it being a very small chance of Mike Pouncey coming. It wouldn't be surprising either.

It would be hard to pass if Mike was there.
