Default Young and Farrior seeking World Bowl Championship

2 with ties to Steelers seek World Bowl championship
Saturday, May 27, 2006

By Michael Preston, Special to the Post-Gazette

DUSSELDORF, Germany -- Two Steelers allocated to NFL Europe this spring are eager to get their hands on a World Bowl XIV ring today..

Receiver Walter Young and linebacker Matt Farrior will start for the Frankfurt Galaxy against the Amsterdam Admirals in the championship game at the 53,000-seat LTU Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany. Young wants to add to the Super Bowl XL ring he won as a practice squad member of the victorious Steelers. Farrior aims to emulate older brother James, the 10-year NFL veteran.

"On a practice squad you work with the team day to day, but you don't get to help the team on the field on game day," said Young. "It is a different feeling being able to point to the contribution you have made to help your team make it to a championship game."

In the Galaxy's run-oriented offense Young started nine of 10 games and finished as the team's second-leading receiver with 31 receptions for 370 yards and three touchdowns.

Farrior, who has excelled on special teams for the Galaxy, admits that living in the shadow of a successful brother can be challenging.

"He's so good, but I've learned a lot from him," Farrior said. "He showed me the ropes and he's been in the league for a long time. He's seen everything, so he helps me with whatever I need to improve on."

Farrior has polished his skills off the field and has brought the versatility of playing all three linebacker positions while at the University of Florida to the Frankfurt defense. He hopes to have done enough to catch the attention of Steelers coaches.

"I just became more knowledgeable about the game," he said of his time in NFL Europe. "I learned how to watch film and study the game and how to be coached a little bit better. My coach here really helped me out with how to study an opponent and schemes. The physical side of the game comes a lot more naturally.

"My goal is just to become a better player and learn the game a little bit more and work on my special teams and running to the ball. Hopefully, I'll be able to make the [Steelers]."

In addition to taking on brotherly advice, Farrior also tapped into the experience of Steelers special teams captain Sean Morey, who played for three seasons in NFL Europe as a wide receiver with the Barcelona Dragons before finally making the NFL grade.

"He told me that the biggest thing to work on is special teams and that's how to get noticed when you get back to the team," said Farrior.

NOTES -- The World Bowl will be broadcast at noon today on the NFL Network. ... Lining up for Amsterdam will be former University of Pittsburgh defensive end Claude Harriott. The All-Big East Conference selection was second on the Admirals with four sacks and posted 22 tackles and a forced fumble. He is an NFL free agent.

Well with the recievers the Steelers have on the roster noway Young makes the team. But do any of you think that Matt Farrior might make the team? Farrior has done well on special teams in Europe and thats always a big thing with Cowher.
